Upto 2009 Caribbean nations received just over £2bn in foreign aid from the British government.

Each year for 10 years after emancipation, from 1835 to 1844, the British government made grants to the islands to build schools churches and infrastructure for the slaves. To help create the foundations of a new free society.

The total was £290,000 (between £246m and £1.4bn today, depending whose conversion figures you choose).
At the time the annual pay for a British housemaid was £6.
