Merry Christmas, Good Luck!
I coach an exercise in 4 steps:
1⃣Introduction
2⃣Let them play and observe.
3⃣Create flow.
4⃣Help the players.
Here, I will talk about the first step: Introduction⬇️
Rule 1: Don't waste time
I want to start the exercise as soon as possible.
There are only two things I talk about:
🔵The goal of the exercise
⚫️The rules of the game
Then start playing.
Learning is an adaptation process to new situations.
It doesn't come from talking.
Minimize wasted time.
Rule 2: Goal vs. Solution Orientation
I talk about the goal of the exercise.
Not about the desired solution.
What do I mean by that?
When you introduce an exercise, you have a specific solution in mind - something you want to improve.
But the focus should not be on the specific solution.
It is about finding solutions.
❌ “Improve passing technique”
✅ “Keep the ball”
The goal of the exercise is to keep possession.
The pass is only a tool.
This may require improving your passing technique.
It is a by-product.
Focus on the goal of the game, not on a specific solution:
❌ Solution-oriented: "Use the third-man concept."
✅ Goal-oriented: "Keep possession against the pressing. "
The solution is only a part of the game.
It is a tool.⚒️
We provoke a situation where this tool will be necessary (or the best option).
Then, we guide him to the solution we have in mind.
What are the problems if we focus on the solution in your explanation?
The brain is biased.
When we focus on something, we become "blind" to everything else.
The player may then use the solution.
Even if it makes no sense and better solutions exist.
The coach might be happy after the exercise.
He saw the desired solution.
But the question is:
Can the player use the solution in the game?
The answer is often no.
The game is unpredictable.
We need players who understand the game and can find the best solution on their own.
Instead of giving solutions, teach them how to solve problems.
"A coach who knows a lot reveals little." (Horst Wein)
The best tool should prevail but not be imposed from outside.
It should be a natural process.
"The best solution wins".
Fall in love with the problem, not the solution.
There is no one-fits-all solution.
In a game of uncertainty, the player must make decisions.
The decision must be the best for a specific and unique situation.
And not a theoretical one from the coach.
We’re giving away 2x 23/24 3rd shirts to two lucky supporters. To enter, simply retweet this tweet, and make sure you’re following us. The competition ends on Saturday and winners will be contacted directly. Good luck! 🌳 #NFFC
