So when Ben Stiller needed to see him in the Les Grossman makeup for Tropic Thunder, they just rolled cameras on the first full look.

Cruise showed up, demanded “fat hands,” and then — with no music playing — launched into full hip-hop moves. Stiller said it was so unexpectedly funny they kept rolling. The next day Cruise himself cut the footage to a track and sent it back. That spontaneous test is the reason the dancing scene (and the end-credits sequence) even exists in the movie.

It’s one of those rare behind-the-scenes moments that shows how much of the final film came from pure improvisation and Cruise refusing to play it safe. The bald, foul-mouthed studio executive with the tiny legs and the killer dance moves almost didn’t happen the way we know him.
