The confirmation yesterday at the Blenheim summit of the Government's full commitment to the ECHR is very good news and will greatly help our diplomatic relations and ability to influence our European partners on issues such as co-operation on dealing with illegal immigration.
The anti ECHR obsession of some Conservatives produced no benefits whatsoever from 2010-24. It led to no repeal of the HRA because no change was possible without leaving the ECHR as well. The downsides to leaving the ECHR were so overwhelming that it was never practical politics. The ECHR has done much good and is one of the great successes of U.K. soft power, raising standards of behaviour by states throughout our continent. Working within it is much more likely to deliver fair solutions to challenges such as illegal immigration than pointless sabre rattling against it.

There was a car with a flat tire at the trailhead today. “That sucks” I thought and started on my run. Passed two Gen-Z chicks coming down the canyon about two miles in. The car with the flat was the only other car at the trailhead so it must be theirs. “That sucks” I thought and kept on about my run. I got back about an hour later and the two chicks are sitting in their car, doors open, all distraught.

“Are you alright?” I asked.

“Yeah… we’re fine… we’re just… it’s fine” the girl in the driver’s seat replies with wide eyes like I’m definitely a serial killer.

It was clearly not fine.

“You have a plan to get down?”

“Yeah, we’ll call someone.”

There’s no cell service for 10 miles in any direction.

“Do you have a spare?” I asked.

“Uhm, I’m not sure. It’s fine” she replies.

It’s a 2016/17-ish Honda HR-V. The spare tire is under the cargo floor.

“You do. I can put it on for you if you want.”

The two chicks stare at each other. “Uhm… no, that’s ok” the driver says to the passenger in the tone of a question.

“You sure? It will take me ten minutes” I said insistently but trying not be a creep.

The two chicks stare at each other some more. (They clearly would have chosen the bear.)

“Or I can call the ranger when I get down to Pasadena.”

The two chicks stare at each other some more. They whisper in girl code. They look me up and down. They stare back at each other. The passenger finally speaks: “uhm, so… would you mind helping us change the tire?”

“Yeah, it’s no problem.”

I have them open the cargo. They dug out enough hiking supplies to hike the PCT.

“You have enough gear to survive out here for a week” I joked.

The two chicks stared at each other. They looked at me. They looked back at each other. In girl code they agreed it’s safe to chuckle. “Hehe, yeah” one of them says.

By the time I got the car lifted, they had let their guard down a little and thanked me “seriously so so so so much.” They told me they had no idea how to change a tire. They’ve never had to change a tire before but one of them did have a dead battery once in college and had to have her dad drive over an hour to come give her a jump.

Ten minutes later, the tire was changed and they seemed genuinely surprised I didn’t kill them. They thanked me again “seriously so so so so much” and assured me that I “have no idea, omg” and then they were on their way.

It made realize how much it sucks to be a woman where every man is a threat until proven otherwise. I don’t blame them for being cautious, but I do blame them for venturing into the mountains with $1000 worth of REI products, but no clue how to change a tire.

Teach your daughters how to change a tire ffs!

I didn't appreciate just how hard it is to push an event when Nottingham has so much going on, but I'm delighted with our first attempt but have definitely ran out of ideas to get the message across of just how good Saturday will be! We still have some tickets! https://t.co/Q8Xh7UcmO3

Whilst Save Windermere doesn’t promote drinking (we stick to sewage), our team has been really enjoying the first few cans of Lakes Brew Co’s NEW Save Windermere beer!

When @lakesbrewco came to us with this idea, it seemed too good to be true! A Save Windermere beer, with 10p from every can going towards the campaign, and a tour around the brewery to boot!

We cannot thank them enough for supporting the campaign. The Save Windermere Leave No Trace brew is now available to buy online and from stockists nationwide! You’ll see it in pubs and bars soon.

With the election rapidly approaching, now is the time to have your voice heard. Sit back, have a beer*, and add your name to our 10-point plan for a sewage-free Windermere at https://t.co/lyChEX1v71. It couldn’t be easier!

(*beer not mandatory)

[MattStaniek @MattStaniek]

Although we politely declined the offer to join @LibDems leader @EdwardJDavey and @timfarron paddle boarding in the p*ssing rain, we did take Ed to see one of the pipes from which United Utilities dumps sewage into Windermere.

Most importantly we gave him our ‘Plan to Save Windermere’, which we believe will stop the sewage entering our lake.

https://t.co/ttj6D0KvIa

The 10 point plan has been shared with all political parties and is now on our website. It includes actions for the short term (achieved in 5 years) and for the longer-term, outlining what needs to be achieved in the next 10 years to protect Windermere forever.

Windermere is the symbol of freshwater in the UK and if we can’t protect it from the exploitation of the water industry and the institutional corruption of the regulators then there is no hope for the rest of the UK’s rivers, lakes and coastlines.

You can help by going to https://t.co/ttj6D0KvIa and adding your voice to our plan to get the politicians to act.

No more photo opportunities, no more rhetoric, it’s time to Save Windermere.

Forest Focus - a great podcast for everything Forest - and not just because Steve Cook says so. Great interviews recently with Henry Winter and with Toff.

18,000 views of this post:-) ForestFocus is the very best Forest pod. Insightful, interesting with opinionated, knowledgeable guests who have something to say, funny and honest. Have a look at this interview and consider subscribing. It’s the best way to keep up with Forest #COYR

The decision to scrap FA Cup replays is devastating news for lower league and non-league football clubs who didn't even get a say on this huge decision.

That's why I'm putting forward an amendment to the Football Governance Bill which would reinstate FA Cup replays.

Although PGMOL sources insist Nottingham Forest did not ask for VAR Stuart Attwell to be removed ahead of their game against Everton due to him being “a Luton fan”, I understand Mark Clattenburg (Forest’s consultant) spoke to Howard Webb on Friday morning around 10:30am.

Clattenburg made it clear that Nottingham Forest requested the removal of Attwell from VAR.

Webb responded that he was not aware Attwell was a Luton fan and refused to change the appointment.

As I said this morning, the pundits & now the premier league stating that we shouldn’t question the integrity of match officials in the premier league aren’t looking at the consequences of such a statement. If you’re not allowed to question anyone you’re giving them free reign to get away with anything 🤷‍♂️ no one should be free from scrutiny

[Stuart Broad @StuartBroad8]

I don’t buy into the VAR being a Luton Fan influencing decisions. Not having that at all. It’s just incompetence.
Why do very few ex players go into match officiating? The yearly salary?
Pay the match officials more to attract the best people maybe?
It can’t carry on like this
