"This might be perceived like we're trying to charge for what happens on the internet", an Apple employee writes about Apple trying to charge for what happens on the internet.
Encryption is absolutely critical for keeping people safe, and governments should encourage it. Banning encryption is a dangerous gift to hackers and hostile foreign governments.
This is really important. If the UK forces a global backdoor into Apple’s security, it will make everyone in every country less safe. One country’s secret order risks putting all of us in danger and it should be stopped.
The pessimists thought technological progress would wipe out most jobs by the end of the 20th century. However, what happens over and over again is that new technologies create unexpected new forms of work, which ultimately makes the economy even bigger.
It's great to see countries in the EU taking a stand against a proposal that would mandate the scanning of everyone's personal messages.
Scanning everyone's messages would weaken the security billions of people rely on to keep them safe online.
And, as 350+ technical experts point out, there's a lot companies, civil society, and governments can (and already) do together to advance child safety instead of this dangerous proposal.

Telegram is the most popular messenger in urban Ukraine. After a decade of misleading marketing and press, most ppl there believe it’s an “encrypted app”
The reality is the opposite-TG is by default a cloud database w/ a plaintext copy of every msg everyone has ever sent/recvd.
My team team is introducing some fun new stuff again today in Messenger and Instagram—Creator AIs and AI Characters. Try making your own on Instagram or you can browse and chat with them on Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp!

My team was part of a really exciting set of announcements today. We introduced the ability to imagine yourself 👨🚀.
We upgraded Meta AI to Llama 3.1, expanded to new languages and countries, and gave you the ability to edit images you've created (add, remove, change, etc).
"We don't open envelopes to read your mail. But we do make sure all your letters are read before allowing them to be put in envelopes." Sure would be nice to focus on principles instead of pretending the moment of interference is what matters.
"The fact that the EU interior ministers want to exempt police officers, soldiers, intelligence officers and even themselves from chat control scanning proves that they know exactly just how unreliable and dangerous the snooping algorithms are that they want to unleash on us citizens."

@wcathcart The physical world equivalent is like sending a government drone to your home that uses on-device AI to go through all your belongings. If it finds something illegal, it reports you to the cops.
The EU proposal to scan people’s private messages is back. This time the proposal is to force everyone to consent to having their photos be scanned and block anyone who does not agree. This is still surveillance and it breaks encryption.
We want the internet to be more secure, but some in the EU keep trying to make it less secure. These attempts to weaken the security of private communications are dangerous and we need a course correction before it’s too late.

Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure, with assistance from Elon Musk. The goal seems to be to get activists to switch away from encrypted Signal to mostly-unencrypted Telegram. I want to talk about this a bit. 1/
This is an exciting day for me and my team. 😄 We’re launching Meta AI with Llama 3 and a bunch of great upgrades—a new tab in Messenger and a search integration in @messenger and @instagram DMs to name a few. We’re also shipping animation for ai generated stickers and images!
