Yesterday there was a debate about the high price of eggs, with someone suggesting “We should just keep chickens for eggs.” Many replied that this isn’t allowed in urban areas of Johannesburg and Tshwane.

After checking the actual bylaws for both Johannesburg and Tshwane, here’s the correct position:

1) You ARE allowed to keep chickens in residential areas of both Joburg and Tshwane.
2) Up to 10 hens per property is permitted (no permit required in most cases).
3) No roosters are allowed (to prevent noise complaints).
4) Hens lay eggs perfectly fine without a rooster, so you get fresh eggs with zero crowing.

Keeping a small backyard flock for eggs is 100% legal and practical in both cities. The myth that “chickens are banned in urban Joburg/Tshwane” is simply not true.
