Sorry to sound like an eeyore but recently I've been struggling to derive much pleasure from local birding, as I feel like I'm witnessing extinction/biodiversity collapse in real time. Thread 1/6
@domgreves@HomesEngland I’m not surprised… very sorry to hear this. Used to enjoy walking the High Weald not far away regularly.
Fought something similar with @MillerHomesUK back home in Yorkshire - I despise the industry for its choices.
Shocking to see the state of some of our chalk streams, and this government is actively worsening their protection and state. (Yes, those are worms which grow in highly polluted water)
Possibly be the cutest bird ever?! Little long tailed tits never fail to make me smile; reminding me how lucky we are to be surrounded by the wonder of nature. I wish you lots of magical nature moments in 2022, and hope it will be a happier year for everyone.💚
@hannah__needham Wow....! How precious. Booked off a few days in June for Headley Heath stake-out (missed them last year!)- and good (or better) sites worth visiting from your experience?
Dartmoor this morning. This land is for sale - 3k acres - it may have a haunting beauty but it is a desert. How wonderful it would be to return the wildlife and woodland to this land. Hard to see how we have any authority to push for forest conservation around the world if don’t
@SteB777 I’ve appreciate reading the articles you’ve shared, but we both know the arguments for driven game aren’t completely invalid. As previously said I’ve seen it first hand, but the bag was 50/60 not xxxx. Hugely helpful to learn more though.
@SteB777@hensrace_g@curlewcalls I wanted to be a gamekeeper too (following family) but fell into music. I wish I was one to run a conservation-minded small shoot.
Shoots don’t need to release so many birds, we both know this. A bag of 80 birds is fine, and it *can* be a great force for good.
@SteB777 Good keepers keep these numbers down. I grew up on a shoot & saw many benefits; from protection of ground-nesting birds to bringing back woodland plant species with good management. As I said, it’s a complex debate, and I’ve learnt something from those two articles.
