My gardener is Turkish. He goes by Cetin. I asked why not use an Americanized name that can be easier for his customers to pronounce and remember. He said his identity was more important than his business.
Francis Fukuyama briefly highlights such trends in his Liberalism and its Discontents. For many today, identity trumps interests, which undermines the basic economics assumption that our species is motivated by their interests rather than emotions. It might also explain the reason why many failed states (Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Palestinian Territories) cannot see the forest for the trees and sink in identity wars that severely hurt their individual and national interests.
My preference: Interests first, but don't let them suppress your identity or make you ashamed of it. When practical, use a more common name (I use Mike for my Starbucks coffee). When practicality is not an issue, use your native name, celebrate your heritage, tell others about it, and pass it on to your off springs. But there is no need to remind everyone, every minute, of your identity. It should not obstruct your life. It should make it more colorful.
