66 years ago today, USS Thresher (SSN 593) was launched at PNS. Three years later, she became the first nuclear submarine lost, spawning the creation of the US Navy's Submarine Safety Program (SUBSAFE).

40 years ago today the Father of the Nuclear Navy, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, passed away at the age of 86.

OTD in 1978: USS Groton (SSN 694) was commissioned. The 688 was the only boat to be named for the submarine capital of the worldโฆ until the beginning of this year when it was announced that Columbia-class boomer SSBN 828 would be named Groton.
Honolulu served 22 years before becoming an organ donor. Her bow served 10 more years on San Francisco, which she needed after hitting a seamount at high speed in 2005.
OTD in 1985: Nautilus came home.
The first nuclear powered submarine, USS Nautilus (SSN 571), arriving at Groton on July 6, 1985; where she remains today as a memorial at the Submarine Force Library and Museum. It took 39 days to tow her from Mare Island.
