UEFA said that FIFA, by making an exception with Balogun and doing so in the middle of the World Cup, has put the integrity of the game "at stake" and set a precedent.
"Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition," the UEFA statement added.
"Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted.”
Thierry Henry on Croatia's exit from the World Cup:
"For me, one thing is important, it's about what I would have done if I had been in the same situation as them. People can debate the penalty and whether the ball was touched before the goal. But what stood out was the way Croatia reacted after the defeat...
They were gracious in defeat. You could see they were crying, but they didn't chase after the referee or cause a scene. Instead, they applauded the others. This Croatian team is extraordinary."
"I would have completely lost my head, whether I was right or wrong. They stayed calm. They have my respect."

🎙️ Ivan Rakitić on Luka Modrić's future:
"I'd ask everyone not to speculate and to let Luka rest. He's earned that. We'd all love to watch him play another 200 matches for Croatia." [N1]
At 40 years old, Luka Modrić led Croatia with 67 touches, had the most defensive interventions among all midfielders on the pitch (11) and won three duels.
All while playing all approximately 105 minutes against João Neves, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and others. Salute to you, Modrić 🇭🇷
Age is just a number. Passion is everything 💪
Luka Modrić after Croatia’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal:
"We can split the game into two parts. In the first half, we weren't at our best and sat too deep. In the second half, we were phenomenal. It was one of our better performances and we should've finished the game earlier.
We missed our chances and then some things happened that are unbelievable to me. It's difficult to say too much right after the match because I don't want to say something wrong. But we can be proud of how we played. We deserved more, but that's football."
Luka Modrić reveals what referee told him after Gvardiol's goal was disallowed:
"He said Matanović touched the ball, but we've seen the replays and nowhere can you see him touching it. If he didn't touch it, then it's not offside."
Luka Modrić on Portugal's penalty:
"If the situation had been reversed, VAR would never have intervened. VAR should only step in if it's a 200% clear mistake. This wasn't a penalty. Both players were holding each other and they both fell. You can't decide a match like this with a call like that."
