A significant milestone for India’s heritage!

5 remarkable properties and serial and transnational proposals have been added to India’s UNESCO Tentative List, taking India’s total to 78.

From the Buddhist murals of Bagh and the Gupta era Udaigiri to the temple heritage of the Chambal Valley, the tribal legacy of Ginnorgarh and the global journey of Satyagraha, these additions reflect the extraordinary diversity of India’s heritage.

This progress reflects the vision of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji to preserve, protect and showcase India’s civilisational heritage on the global stage.

The Sites of Satyagraha

A powerful chapter of India’s modern history has also entered the UNESCO Tentative List.

“The Sites of Satyagraha: The Emergence and Institutionalization of the Non Violent Movement” is a serial transnational proposal connecting South Africa and Bharat.

From Pietermaritzburg and Phoenix Settlement to Sabarmati, Mani Bhavan, Sevagram, Aga Khan Palace and Gandhi Smriti, these sites trace the evolution of Satyagraha from its formative years to a movement that carried the ideals of truth, dignity and non violence across the world.

A fitting recognition of a legacy that belongs to Bharat, yet speaks to humanity.

The historic Ginnorgarh Fort has been added to India’s @UNESCO Tentative List.

A remarkable fortified capital associated with the Gond rulers, Ginnorgarh reflects indigenous traditions of governance, defence, architecture and water management.

Its massive fortifications, palatial remains, stepwells and reservoirs tell the story of a distinctive and important chapter of India’s tribal heritage.

Every community, every region and every tradition has a place in India’s heritage story.

Bagh Cave Paintings, Madhya Pradesh

The magnificent Bagh Cave Paintings have been added to India’s @UNESCO Tentative List.

Dating to the Gupta period, the caves preserve remarkable Buddhist rock cut architecture and murals depicting royal courts, processions, musicians, dancers and scenes of social life.

They offer a rare window into the artistic and cultural life of central India nearly 1,500 years ago.

Temples of the Chambal Valley, Madhya Pradesh

The Group of Temples of the Chambal Valley, Bateshwar, Padavali and Kakarmath, has been added to India’s @UNESCO Tentative List.

Together, these remarkable temples showcase the evolution of early medieval Nagara temple architecture and the artistic traditions that flourished under the Gurjara Pratihara and Kachchhapaghata dynasties.

Another magnificent chapter of Bharat’s architectural heritage moves closer to global recognition.

Udaigiri Caves, Madhya Pradesh

The Udaigiri Caves, one of the most important surviving sacred landscapes of the Gupta period, have been added to India’s @UNESCO Tentative List.

Its magnificent rock cut caves, monumental Varaha relief, inscriptions and sacred landscape bear testimony to a formative period in the evolution of Indian art, architecture and religious traditions.

India’s heritage is a continuum, and Udaigiri is one of its remarkable early chapters.
