CALGARY NEEDS A DASHBOARD FOR WATER LEAKS: The assertion by a city engineer that Calgary’s water loss problem is “like looking for needles in haystacks” because the system is large, speaks volumes about how Calgary’s water system is managed.
Edmonton's rate of water loss is estimated to be 5%. Calgary's rate of water loss is approximately 22%.
Best practice does not involve searching blindly for leaks across thousands of kilometres of pipe, but rather risk-based asset management.
The issue is not system size, it is prioritization. The South Bearspaw Feeder Main supplies approximately 60% of the Calgary’s water, has no redundancy, and is constructed of a PCCP vintage known for sudden failure. That is not a “needle in a haystack.” That is a known, high-consequence risk that should have been subject to proactive inspection and continuous monitoring years earlier.
Framing leakage as inevitable because the system is large shifts attention away from governance and investment decisions. Calgarians want those in charge of water system to know where the highest risks are, act on that knowledge, and protect critical infrastructure before failure occurs.

Watching the water main discussions. This 'no accountability' stuff needs to stop. There were/are senior people actively responsible for utilities and water services. Infrastructure GM/Utilities Delivery Director and Operations Services GM/Water Services Director.
Councillor Landon Johnston: "From October 20 to November, their priority was doing 17 land acknowledgements in the first five days of orientation. At no point did we receive important reports."
🚨Independent review into 2024 failure of the Bearspaw south feeder main highlights 20 years of underinvestment, failure to upkeep aging infrastructure, and insufficient risk and asset integrity processes.
The systemic gaps are due to "ineffective management, and a lack of effective governance oversight."
Simply; the Calgarians were getting fleeced by constant tax increases while the City of Calgary was failing to do its core work while wasting time and money on ideological and DEI stupidity.
We need to see all admins fired immediately and investigated. All none core departments immediately closed and the paper pushers fired.
These savings should go towards reducing our taxes and building sounds infrastructure for the Calgary.
The grift is over.
The City of Calgary has a serious liability here.
Personal Opinion: There is probably a path to seeing revocation of Covid mRNA vaccine approval by the US FDA for good cause based on emerging evidence of unexpected contaminants from an altered manufacturing process, unexpected biodistribution and other biological characteristics in humans. Information on effects of repeated boosters and adverse outcomes (including long term) among different age groups or situations (early pregnancy, young men, neuropsychiatric effects, clotting, fertility, prior COVID infection, etc) is essential to shape guidance and any continued approval. The FDA could warn the various manufacturers of revocation of approval by a certain date in the immediate future if satisfactory evidence of clean manufacturing and safety is not provided immediately or has not already been provided to the FDA. The evidence should undergo high standards of scrutiny given numerous issues as well as technical concerns surrounding assays used to assess product quality. There should be significant financial and other punitive sanctions towards those responsible (manufacturers or those who were or are within FDA or CDC should evidence be found) based on lapses or inaccuracies in reporting of issues that have surfaced including serious and prolonged adverse events that seriously hampered informed consent. Limiting mRNA Covid vaccine product indication severely should also be considered based on current risk:benefit assessments and available or undeveloped alternative treatments. @VPrasadMDMPH@DrMakaryFDA@RobertKennedyJr@RWMaloneMD@MaryanneDemasi@Kevin_McKernan@JesslovesMJK@danaparish@efenigson@Fynnderella1@US_FDA@TracyBethHoeg@RetsefL@KUPERWASSERLAB@DrJBhattacharya@Jikkyleaks@SabinehazanMD@SenRonJohnson@RandPaul@DrBobRedfield51
@CalgaryRecall Speaking of Comms, I submitted a request to meet with Mayor Farkas to discuss his promise to raise the issue of 67 km of old asbestos cement water mains in Calgary a month ago. Since then, the sounds of silence. @Landonforward14@KirstinMorrell@KirkLubimov#yyccc
@kim_tyers If council is serious about accountability, it’s time to seriously considering what levers they have to get admin back in line. Fire Duckworth!!!
Early yesterday morning, I met one on one with CAO Duckworth. In that meeting, I requested the Independent Review Panel report on the Bearspaw Watermain Break to be urgently provided to council as soon as possible.
I have been told the report will be provided a week from now. We are in an emergency crisis with multiple communities under Boil Water Advisory and the entire city is under reduced water consumption. Council needs that report immediately.
Finally, the straw that broke the camel’s back! Admin runs the show and it’s a 🤡 show! It’s long past time for the circus to end!
“Smith wonders if city council has problems even being able to do proper oversight of the city hall higher-ups.”
What Calgarians aren't talking about - in regards to the New Water Main Break...
Hydrofluorosilicic acid used for water fluoridation, is highly corrosive and can indeed eat through concrete.
Yes...the pipes are in desperate need of attention but the absolute worst thing we could do is to add a corrosive agent to them, instead of proper maintenance.
Thank you for attending my TedTalk.
Pre 2024 the City’s infrastructure replacement report used a life of 100yrs for the Bearspaw feeder main.
That “long life” meant replacement cost was discounted.
Admin ought to have known from other cities that the life was 50yrs
Why was the life not updated?

@AlbertansFirst Funny, I just had this conversation. So many people that were so against all things O&G in this province are suddenly worried about it 🤔
Regarding the Independent Water Report: I had asked that there were assurances the water report before December 31st would not be altered and any additions after the 31st to the report be highlighted to ensure complete confidence of the report not being affected by the recent water main break. I was told by The Mayor: "that the panel (and its findings) be independent of any political interference and that we avoid attempting to direct any edits. Calgarians need to have the confidence that this professional group did their complete work unfettered by interference from us or admin". Sorry but asking to protect a report from edits is not an attempt to edit the report. As well the Mayor directly talking to the chair and not the liaison of the independent group has now broken the political aspect of being unfettered by interference.

Professional Engineer: Outstanding questions about Bearspaw South Feeder Main Pipe Investigation. Where are the answers #yyccc and what are you doing to ensure this doesn’t happen again?

@Draivaden@Patty71711679@cspotweet What if the owner of the mall was promoting the petition and encouraging customers to sign it? Outside involvement is not the intent of the legislation.
@Draivaden@Patty71711679@cspotweet The intent behind the recall legislation is that it is driven by those within a constituency. Signatures collected by and signed by individuals living in the constituency. This walks a pretty fine line, with such heavy involvement from outside the constituency boundary.
@Stockwell_Day This guy isn’t even going to have a seat after the next election. Call it whatever you like, put a ‘conservative’ face on it, few will be fooled into believing this party is actually conservative. The vote split will be on the left, not the right.
@JMeddings Ontario’s rate of vaccination follows the national average. I have yet to see data showing 💉 status of those hospitalized for flu. I really wish public health put even a small % of attention & focus on the things people can do to boost their immune systems, other than 💉.
