The last thing I remember is seeing three police officers on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora, Colorado, waving me over. Each was holding a black, heavy lead nightstick.

The next thing I know, Im being told to leave the hospital. Eighteen hours have passed since my last memory. My head is ringing, a deep, throbbing pain like it’s been hit with a sledgehammer.

I make my way to the restroom. I look in the mirror and my blood runs cold. I see five large, distinct lumps swollen on my head. Dried blood is caked on my face in drips that started from my scalp. What the hell happened? The scars from that day are still on my skull.

It took a week for the memory to surface: the image of those nightsticks. The truth is, there was an unprovoked police beating that left me with a traumatic brain injury that took 5 years to heal.
