U.S. President Donald Trump's recent decision to indefinitely halt all immigration visa processing for citizens of 75 countries across the Global South is more than just another populist policy move that panders to spiking anti-immigration sentiment across the Global North. While the flow of resources from imperial extremities to the imperial core is a well-known feature of the imperial economic system, the flow of people in the same direction is less well known: it is not simply incidental to imperialism but central to it.

In addition to providing a large base of cheap, exploitable labour for the consumption of imperial metropoles, the large-scale systematic migration of the young, best and brightest from the Global South to the Global North has served to maintain the political status quo in the Global South. This process serves as a demographic and economic pressure-release valve, preventing the Global South from building a critical mass of young, educated, and dissatisfied people that would threaten the empire's economic and political foundations.

Nigerian author and investigative journalist David Hundeyin explores how despite knowing fully well that mass migration from the edges of an empire to its centre are essential to maintain its economic and political balance, Trump's anti-immigration onslaught is an attempt by a falling empire to extend its reign by significantly redefining - but not fundamentally changing - the extractive rules and principles that the empires of the Global North have rested on for decades.
