If you are the provider and generous giver in your family or circle, once in a while, try this:

Act broke, nag like you’re in a negative spiral, then text the people you love/help/rate the most, you know, those who you sometimes place their needs above yours.. text them that you’re in a mess and you need a certain amount urgently (N200k, N500k, N1m, N5m, N10m, N20m). Tell some others you want to sell your possessions; your car, your jewelry, Your phone, your land, your house etc, if they ask why, tell them it’s because you need that money urgently.

Now observe their reactions. Their reaction would show you exactly who they are and how they see/rate you, whether as a kind person or as a fool, every single one of them.

If they respond that they don’t have money, without at least making moves to help you borrow from someone, I hope you learn the lesson.

If they help you find a buyer for your property shortly after you told them, I hope you learn your lesson.

Trust me, you need this realization.

Dear Brother,

Then a Yoruba man can be Sultan, and a Fulani can be Alaafin. A presidential candidate may emerge from Kaduna, his running mate from Kebbi, and the entire federal cabinet assembled from citizens of Ado-Ekiti - innit? What disaster do you think await?

But reality is not so naïve.

The earlier we acknowledge that Nigeria is not a monolith but a curious mosaic - a country stitched together from many nations that existed long before the country found its name - the wiser we become. Unlike America, ours is not a blank slate; it is a palimpsest of histories, identities, hierarchies, and negotiated coexistence.

The earlier we realize that not every glittering theory imported from distant lands can be copied, pasted, and expected to function here, the better. What works where snow falls cannot always thrive where harmattan blows. Context in this regard is not an inconvenience; but the compass.

State of Origin will NEVER be abolished. Identities need not be sacrificed for development to arrive. Roots are not obstacles to growth; they are the soil from which growth is possible.

Nations thrive not by pretending difference does not exist, but by organizing difference into strength. Identity, when properly acknowledged, does not divide; it disciplines power, preserves balance, and anchors belonging.

To imagine that prosperity requires uniformity is to confuse harmony with sameness. The drum and the flute do not sound alike, yet together they make music. Nigeria’s challenge has never been identity - it has been the refusal to manage identity with wisdom, fairness, and honesty.

So no, “State of Origin” will not disappear. Nor should it. The task before us is not abolition, but equilibrium: a country where identity is respected, opportunity is justly distributed, and development arrives without demanding that anyone first forget who they are.
