The biggest zombie show in TV history ran 177 episodes and skipped the part where the world actually ends.

Its main character slept through it. Rick Grimes got shot on the job, spent weeks in a coma, and woke up in a hospital surrounded by bodies. Whatever happened to the rest of the world happened while he was out, and we were out with him.

That was on purpose. Robert Kirkman built his 2003 comic that way, and for 11 seasons the TV show mostly kept the collapse offscreen. You'd get a flashback here and there. The rest was aftermath.

So this clip from Daryl Dixon hits hard. It's the night the outbreak reaches Paris. Isabelle has been out at the clubs lifting watches off rich guys, and she walks outside into a city that's starting to come apart. Nobody on that street knows what they're looking at yet.

Hitchcock explained what's going on here in his 1962 interviews with Truffaut. If you hide a bomb under a table and it goes off out of nowhere, he said, the audience gets fifteen seconds of surprise. If you show them the bomb first, that same boring conversation at the table turns into fifteen minutes of suspense, because now everyone watching is dying to warn the people on screen.

The Walking Dead spent 13 years showing us the bomb.

Anyone watching in 2023 knew the rules cold. You aim for the head, and once somebody gets bit they're already gone. Isabelle doesn't know any of that. To her, a guy stumbling toward her is probably just drunk, and she might even stop to see if he's okay.

That's why the first night is everybody's favorite part of a zombie story. For one stretch you're the one who knows what's going on, and you get to sit there watching people make mistakes you'd never make. Once the characters catch up, it goes back to waiting for the next jump scare.

Hitchcock liked to put a clock on the wall so you could watch the time run out. Kind of perfect, then, that Isabelle spends the last normal night in Paris stealing watches.
