Scientists have made big progress in growing mini kidneys called organoids or assembloids in lab using stem cells. In September 2025 USC Stem Cell team in USA and some from China published in Cell Stem Cell journal. They created advanced structures combining filtering parts nephrons and urine collecting ducts.
These are most realistic ones so far about 1 mm size.
Not full adult kidney yet but very close to real function like filtering waste and making dilute urine not ready for transplant in people. It is still small organoid working in animal tests. Goal is to one day make full synthetic kidney for thousands waiting on list in US and around world who suffer end stage kidney disease. Over 100000 in America alone need transplant but donors short.
