@civiltalker This is something I ponder almost daily! I previously worked in consultancy. I think I prefer academia for the independence, flexible working style, opportunity to travel and research. The value of profit over all else, incl quality just didn't sit well with me.
There are also plentiful examples in science of drones delivering new understanding of: ecosystem properties, landscape dynamics, and animal behaviour. I hope this incident does not result in knee-jerk legislation that stops such beneficial work in its tracks.
Today = drones in the UK news. Important to remember: thousands of drones in the UK, and yet incidents like this remain v. rare. I expect there will now be a discussion about bans/tighter legislation/pilot registration but I don't think these would prevent incidents like this.
