We will have 6 high school students working with us this summer! These students will have opportunities to learn & grow their programming experience while supporting our sample analysis and air monitoring efforts. Read about our past summer students here: https://t.co/S7ToEliurS
#NCRP just released their latest report, titled "Evaluating and Communicating Radiation Risks for Studies Involving Human Subjects: Guidance for Researchers and Institutional Review Boards". You can find a summary here: https://t.co/wPbzEmsq0a

@HOMO8COSMICUS As a rule, we won't explicitly judge the many #FusionEnergy paths on twitter. One of the main difficulties, illustrated by @JB_Fusion, is the extreme difficulty of the H-B reaction, compared to other reactions. There is, however, the extreme benefit of no neutrons.
Danny is interested in coordinating with residents of Treasure Island to reflect on the impacts nuclear technologies have had on their lives, as well as outreach to any individual or groups of people impacted by radiation.
Daniel Solakian is an Undergrad Student Researcher working with the Dosenet/Radwatch team to educate, empower, and provide tools for the public to understand radiation and the environment surrounding them.
Danny is also writing a timepiece about the path forward for society - where nuclear power needs to have a place in healing the planet and addressing climate change concerns.
Ruiqi, a visiting undergraduate student, is working on the ROI method to find peak counts of isotopes. She is working with a KCl- LaCl_3-LuCl_3 liquid sample, and just finished calibration of the spectrum. Next, she will be calculating the efficiency of K-40, La-138 and Lu-176.
We are sheltering in place to flatten the curve, so we aren't currently doing any lab work. However, several of our team members are working from home to continue some of our projects.
Radiation exposure/dose per year depends on life choices—however the average, healthy US citizen receives about 3.6 micro-Sieverts (360 millirem) of dose per year. Radon gas is the cause of more than half of that exposure.
Hope you learned something from this series of tweets! @bordnerautumn signing off now
Closing remark: too often outsiders adopt a victimizing attitude toward RMI. I’m proud to be working with UCBRadWatch, which is committed to empowering communities thru respectful collaboration
And last thread! Continuing from: https://t.co/zByqyv2w77 Despite these challenges, Marshallese have never been passive victims. RMI National Nuclear Commissioner, Alson Kelan, reminds us, “If we can survive the atomic bomb, I'm sure we will survive climate change. We'll adapt."
Continuing from: https://t.co/JdqyHjF4sp, as RMI grapples with the legacy of U.S. nuclear testing, #ClimateChange poses an existential threat. W/o #adaption the islands are predicted to be lost by 2050, and w/them Marshallese #sovereignty and #selfdetermination.
More soon, once #COVID19 dies down (btw RMI's pop is highly susceptible due to US #colonialism & #nuke testing. @united cancelled flights there b4 RMI received supplies 2 combat #cornonavirus. Actions have consequences; we should take responsibility 4 them
https://t.co/qrUlgbvPHI
Unfortunately for RMI, we did not get our personal protective equipment before United Airlines cut off all flights to the island until April 5th. Lucky no COVID-19 cases yet and pray it stays that way.

The legacy of U.S. #nuclear testing and #colonialism directly impedes adaptation that could enable the islands' survival. Tune in for my next thread later today to learn more! If you can’t wait, check out my paper in @HRLROnline @Columbia: https://t.co/LrrRj8Tgn6
For more on the #sovereignty implications of #colonial dynamics in #climate adaption, see the paper I recently published w/@ELSenviron along with my @stanford colleagues @cefergus and Len Ortolano. https://t.co/iPb6mH6Osj
