@HonByamukama has conducted an inspection of works on the 11.7km Kinogozi–Buhimba Road (Lot 5), a key road project supporting Uganda’s preparations for AFCON 2027.
The contractor has mobilised equipment, and works covering all pavement layers are ongoing. The Minister has commended the contractor and technical team for the good progress, urging them to sustain the momentum and deliver quality work within the planned seven months.
Upon completion, the road will improve connectivity, ease the movement of people and goods, and support tourism and economic activity as Uganda prepares to co-host AFCON 2027.
UEGCL Engages Stakeholders on Proposed Maziba HPP Rehabilitation
Today, the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) engaged Kabale District leaders and Kabale University on the proposed rehabilitation and potential upgrade of Maziba Hydropower Plant (HPP).
The engagement focused on exploring how the project can deliver value beyond electricity generation by creating opportunities for local participation, strengthening indigenous technical capacity, enhancing UEGCL’s project development capabilities, and stimulating regional economic growth.

Today, I continued my engagements with local leaders and key stakeholders across the Acholi and Lango sub-regions to strengthen the rollout of the GROW Business Plan Competition.
I reaffirmed our commitment to fairness and integrity. Like the message is clear applying to the GROW competition is 100% free. Any attempt to charge applicants or exploit youth will not be tolerated. I urge local leaders to guide their communities, ensure accurate information reaches young entrepreneurs, and report any corrupt practices immediately.
Ahead of our upcoming Hands-on Business Clinics, I task all Commercial and Focal Point Officers with providing direct, practical guidance to young applicants. Together, we will expand opportunities and drive lasting economic growth across Acholi, Lango, and Uganda.
Kigezi Must Upgrade From Subsistence Production to Wealth-creating activities, Minister Musasizi Says.
By Joanita Kobugabe-Communication Officer.
The Government has renewed its call for households in the Kigezi sub-region to move away from subsistence production and embrace wealth-creating activities that can improve household incomes.
Speaking at the Kigezi Regional GROW stakeholders meeting held on Thursday 08th October 2026, Minister of finance Hon.Henry Masasizi said the government is committed to implementing President Yoweri Museveni’s vision of transforming households from subsistence production into the money economy.
He said about 27 per cent of people in Kigezi are still living below the poverty line, while 35 per cent of households remain trapped in the subsistence economy, compared with the national rate of 33 per cent.
“This should change during the current five-year term,” the minister said.
Hon. MKusasizi said the challenge was particularly significant in Kigezi, where land is scarce, with the average household owning about 0.8 acres.
He urged farmers to make better use of their limited land by adopting productive agricultural enterprises and other income-generating activities, including approaches promoted under the Four-Acre Model.
The minister also emphasised the importance of the Parish Development Model (PDM), which he described as a key government programme for eliminating household poverty and bringing communities into the money economy.
“When I was appointed as State Minister of Finance in 2021, one of my first tasks from President Museveni was to look for funds to capitalize the PDM programme. I’m here to remind you that we are still determined to ensure that the vision of the President under the PDM is realised,” he said.
He urged communities to embrace wealth creation and make productive use of the resources available to them rather than relying solely on subsistence farming.
The government is also seeking to improve transport infrastructure in the region to support economic activity and reduce the cost of doing https://t.co/PMKPFZA3E9 a separate update on infrastructure development, Minister Musasizi said the Hamurwa–Keerere–Kanungu–Butogota–Ruhiija Road Project had been approved after he presented a Cabinet paper on the project.
Other road projects mentioned include the Rubuguri–Kisoro, Katuna–Muko and Rubaare–Nyarushanje–Muhanga–Kisiizi roads.
The government also plans to expand railway infrastructure, with the Standard Gauge Railway expected to lower transportation costs and improve the movement of goods.
Musasizi said the railway would significantly reduce the cost of transporting a container from Mombasa to Kampala, from about $2,000 to $100.
He said the government of Uganda remains committed to creating an enabling environment in which women-owned businesses can grow, create employment and contribute to Uganda’s economic transformation.
The minister's message was clear: with limited land and persistent poverty still affecting many households in Kigezi, communities must increasingly focus on productivity, enterprise and wealth creation if the region is to make the transition from subsistence to a money-based economy.
