When the ANC assumed power in 1994, they inherited the most sophisticated economic engine on the African continent.

It takes centuries of capital accumulation, spatial planning, and disciplined maintenance to build an interconnected civilization, but it takes only a few decades of deliberate neglect to destroy it.

🚨 From Bernie to “Full-Fledged Communists”: Inside DSA’s Radicalization

Christopher Winston, known by many for his online moniker BlackRedGuard, is never one to hide behind language or dodge a question.

He says people who entered DSA through Bernie Sanders have since become “full-fledged communists.” He says younger members are drawn to Red Rabbits, DSA security team largely focused on protests, because they like seeing DSA “actually taking this stuff seriously.”

And a lot has changed in the last few years for Winston as he became a national DSA leader. He is co-chair of National AfroSoc, sits on the steering committee of a national Red Rabbits Security Commission, leads a local Red Rabbits subcommittee, and serves as a political education co-chair.

Meanwhile, he openly talks about “toppling and overthrowing this shit,” says “the proletariat must eventually eat up the bourgeoisie,” upholds “protracted people’s war,” and would like to see the state become a Maoist “proletarian weapon.” These are tame considering other past comments on his.

What I wish journalists interviewing DSA leaders would do is move beyond simply accepting the “big tent” explanation and actually press them on the figures gaining influence inside the organization. Christopher Winston is a perfect example. If someone holds multiple local and national roles while openly advocating Marxist-Leninist-Maoist politics, “protracted people’s war,” and revolutionary state power, DSA’s leadership should be asked directly what that says about the organization’s trajectory.

If you understand the strategic use of “sustainability” through the WEF, UN, and Laudato Si’, you can begin to see what JD Vance is advocating.

Strip away the environmental rhetoric, and “sustainability” becomes something much closer to Marcuse’s “New Sensibility”: a transformation of values, consumption, property, and expectations about material abundance.

That is precisely where the postliberal “New Right” becomes difficult to distinguish from the Progressive Left. They increasingly reject the liberal conception of individual liberty and voluntary exchange in favor of “the common good,” “Common Good Capitalism,” distributism, and "Stakeholder Capitalism" that subordinate markets to an imposed social order.

And while the language has changed, the underlying impulse toward managed society has not.

The supposed "New Right" (post-liberals, integralists, monarchists etc) opponents of the WEF are increasingly converging with its governing philosophy - only with a different theological vocabulary.

Listen carefully to Vance’s Senate remarks in the video below from a just few years ago. The underlying premise is hard to miss: American consumers cannot be trusted to make sufficiently “good” choices when goods are abundant and cheap.

Once that premise is accepted, the next question is obvious: who gets to decide what we should consume, how much we should consume, and what constitutes “too cheap”?

Of course, this isn’t a defense of liberty: it is the intellectual groundwork for a managed economy where the state, rather than free individuals, increasingly determines what constitutes an acceptable level of consumption.

In One-Dimensional Man (1964), Frankfurt School Neo-Marxist Herbert Marcuse explicitly distinguishes between “true” and “false” needs. He argues that advertising and the consumer economy generate needs that become internalized by individuals, including the desire to continually consume commodities. He regarded many of these needs as socially imposed and ultimately repressive.

Marcuse argued that greater material prosperity could itself impede revolutionary consciousness.

In his 1967 lecture Liberation from the Affluent Society, Marcuse described the problem as liberation from a wealthy society that was increasingly capable of satisfying people’s material and cultural needs. He believed that genuine liberation required the emergence of new needs and satisfactions qualitatively different from those produced by the affluent capitalist system.

And the issue, for the postliberal integralists calling for “regime change”, is the revolution.

Marcuse argued that affluent capitalist societies manufacture and internalize consumer needs, making individuals believe that consumption constitutes freedom. His theory therefore questioned whether unrestricted consumer choice actually represented genuine liberty and called for a transformation of human needs and social values.

And now millions of Republicans and conservatives have woken up to the fact that Vance and his fellow integralists are mounting an ideological campaign within conservative circles that mirrors the same Marcusean movement that has taken control of the American Left.

So when JD Vance says, “I survey the American economy and I see our mass consumption of mostly useless imports,” pay attention to Vance's premise:

He is no longer just criticizing trade policy: Vance is now implicitly elevating himself, and the political class, to the position of deciding which of your wants are legitimate.

Your iWatch. Your spatula. Your running shoes. Your car. At what point do these become “mostly useless,” and who gets to decide?

This is where the ghost of Herbert Marcuse begins to whisper through the rhetoric:
the distinction between real needs and manufactured wants, the suspicion of abundance, and the conviction that liberation requires transforming the desires of the consumer.

Now, of course, the vocabulary isn’t identical. But the governance problem is remarkably familiar: when someone else gets to define your “real needs,” your freedom of choice has already been placed on the chopping block.
