An argument for the single sense of Scripture…

From the Nature of Meaning:

Premise 1: Any statement that bears a determinate meaning bears exactly one meaning.

Premise 2: Scripture bears determinate meaning — its words communicate the mind of God with precision and authority.

Conclusion: Therefore, Scripture bears exactly one meaning per passage — the sense of Scripture is singular.

The first premise is a logical axiom — the precondition of meaning as such. Fourfold meaning is the functional abolition of meaning dressed in the language of richness. As Tolkien’s Bilbo Baggins discovered when a cheerful good morning was made to mean wish, observation, self-report, and moral prescription simultaneously — “all of them at once” (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit [Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1966], 17–18) — the result is not enriched communication but whimsical indeterminacy.

The quadriga applied to the text of Scripture produces precisely this result. What was a perfectly clear and determinate communication has become, under the pressure of fourfold meaning, a statement that can no longer be received as meaning any one thing in particular.

Navy Pier ... Dead Body pulled from Lake Michigan

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A body was pulled from Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago on Friday morning, police said.

Chicago police said the CPD Marine Unit recovered a male of an unknown age from the water in the 900-block of East Grand Avenue around 9:30 a.m.

The person was pronounced dead on the scene. How he died was not immediately clear, and his identity was not immediately released.

Area Three detectives are conducting a death investigation pending autopsy results.

Police did not immediately provide further information.

DARK BEAM APPEARED ACROSS THE SKY OVER ILLINOIS

Something unusual stretched across the sky over Lynwood, Illinois.

At first glance, it looked like a giant dark line cutting through the clouds.

The feature appeared to extend nearly from horizon to horizon and was so striking that it almost didn’t look real.

This remarkable scene was captured on video by Tina and DeAnna after they stepped outside and noticed the strange formation overhead.

Whatever caused it, it definitely got people’s attention.
