Expanding the World Cup may have been great for the group stage but now at least 3 of the top 4 ranked teams have made the semifinals. It seems like it just made the knockouts way easier for the best teams, who can rest players, avoid red cards, and prevent injuries
A sad way for Erling Haaland and Norway to go out of the #FIFAWorldCup but they definitely left a lot of stellar memories for their fanbase.
Not many had them going to the quarterfinals. A positive run!
Re: Pulisic.
Here’s my take: dude is just a little socially awkward and doesn’t handle press particularly well. Not something I’ve ever blamed him for - many players are much better at it, but I am not owed anyone’s time or attention at the end of the day. That’s my attitude.
@beerwhispererr@rassi_daniel@usmntonly Pulisic’s off field attitude isn’t why Dest can’t play defense and it’s not why 38 year old Tim Rean was our best CB option
I’ll never defend anyone who acts like this. But for anyone who wants to see “our best athletes” in soccer, this is extremely common among NBA and NFL players
Landon Donovan goes OFF on Christian Pulisic 😮
“People are fed up with the way things are handled around him. And it's not necessarily him, but it's his agents, his family, his hangers-on, the people who are influencing. People are fed up with it.”
“They treat people poorly. They do things poorly. It's always a 'no' whenever you wanna ask, 'Can we do an interview?' It's always a, 'No, you can't get near him.' He doesn't say 'hi' to the commentators who do all the games all the time when they walk by.”
We lost to Ghana, a team the Guardian expected us to “dominate”, in the same round in which we lost to Belgium. You could argue that Donovan trying to play injured hurt us far more than it helped
USMNT legend Landon Donovan:
"You would've had to fucking drag me off the field. And I would've punched the doctor in the face and said, 'You're not taking me off the field."
A large amount of our best athletes play basketball and yet the world is slowly catching up to us there, too. A large percentage of our best athletes play baseball and we might not even be in the top two in that sport
I’ve heard people say “well we don’t have an open system in basketball and we’re still best in the world.”
Guys, in a little over 30 years foreign players went from almost no nba players and getting ran off court with our best to:
-8 straight foreign MVPs
-since 2021 first team all nba has been 21/30 foreign spots
-college bball recruiting has shifted to be a race for the best 20 year old euro players
If you don’t think their approach to development on all fronts including club structure and professional league structure impacts this you’re crazy.
If I told you a month ago that Americans will be giving props to Seb Berhalter and slinging criticism to Christian Pulisic after the cup, you would have said I was high.
But it’s true. Because as Americans, we value toughness, grit, & never giving up.
@KRod_505@andrewcarleton7 Development is nonlinear and inconsistent. Players start developing when they start playing and don’t stop developing until their mid 20s. Some players develop the most in their mid teens. Some develop in their late teens, some not until they’re in their early 20s
@nitepsychotrp@earthworm_jim05@NSC_Guru They were out shot 27-9. Corners were 19-4. They got absolutely owned. The only thing they had that was better was a goalkeeper. Without Howard, they would have lost 6-0
The most baffling thing about this play is that Freese coming out of the box like this almost certainly saved a goal initially. Unfortunately his controller ran out of batteries at a horrible time though.
Taking a little pause from my writing here to remind all of you (or those of you who need reminding) that athletes who make mistakes are still human beings and should be treated as such. Thank you.
