The U. S. Marshals Survivors Benefit Fund was founded in 2012 in response to the loss of 10 Deputy and Special Deputy U. S. Marshals in the line of duty in 2011

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Adam Heitman of the Creek County (OK) Sheriff’s Office. On July 15, he suffered a medical emergency immediately following a foot pursuit for a wanted felon.

Deputy Heitman had served with the Creek County Sheriff’s Office for six years and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

The U.S. Marshals Survivors Benefit Fund mourns the line of duty loss of Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael "Drew" Hanson in Alexandria, LA on July 13, 2026. Drew was part of a task force serving an arrest warrant when he was shot and killed by the wanted subject. The Fund will be providing support and assistance to the Hanson family. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Sergeant Scott Ries of the Rittman (OH) Police Department. On July 5, he was shot and killed as he responded to a shots fired call.

Sergeant Ries had served with the Rittman Police Department for 10 years and 30 years in law enforcement.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Trooper Michael Pahira of the Pennsylvania State Police. On July 1, he was struck and killed by a commercial vehicle while conducting a vehicle safety inspection in Cass Township.

Trooper Pahira served with the Pennsylvania State Police for more than 19 years.

Trooper Pahira is survived by his parents and a sister.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Trevor Howard of the Marked Tree (AR) Police Department. On June 28, he died when the patrol vehicle in which he was traveling was struck by another vehicle that disregarded a stop sign.

Officer Howard had served with the Marked Tree Police Department for two months.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Erika Serrato of the Montgomery County (TX) Sheriff’s Office. On June 28, she was directing traffic at the scene of an accident when she was struck by a heavy duty commercial vehicle and killed.

Deputy Serrato had served with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for six years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Damian Bost of the Columbus County (NC) Sheriff’s Office. On June 25, he was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer while assisting with a road construction project.

Deputy Bost served with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office for eight years.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Sandra Blair of the DeSoto (TX) Police Department. On May 26, she passed away from injuries sustained in 1999 when she was struck by an intoxicated driver while conducting an accident investigation.

Officer Blair served with the DeSoto Police Department for two years

She is survived by her mother, sister, brother, and daughter.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Dustin Krish of the Carrollton (GA) Police Department. On June 11, 2025, he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic. Nearly a year later on June 9, 2026, he passed away from the injuries sustained during the accident.

Officer Krish had served with the Carrollton Police Department for three years.

He is survived by his wife and brother.

We extend our thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and colleagues of Trooper Sergio Romero of the Texas Department of Public Safety. On June 17, he was killed when his patrol vehicle struck a tractor-trailer on Highway 287 near Childress.

Trooper Romero had served with the Texas DPS for nine months.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.

On June 14, 2015, Deputy U.S. Marshal Zacarias Toro passed away after a valiant battle with cancer. His illness was a direct result of his rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center following September 11, 2001. Deputy Toro was a responder to the attacks on the World Trade Center, courageously providing security for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and assisting with the search and rescue efforts. On June 6, 2015, Toro was presented with the United States Marshals Service Purple Heart Award for the injuries he sustained during the performance of his duties that ultimately led to his death. He left behind a wife and four children. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Deputy Logan Utt of the Carroll County (VA) Sheriff’s Office. On May 29, he was shot and killed while conducting a welfare check at a residence in Cana.

Deputy Utt, age 31, had served with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office for two years and is a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Deputy Utt is survived by his wife and two children.

Officer Yeager, age 42, had served with the Central Berks Regional Police Department for more than two years.

She is survived by her husband and three children.

Sergeant Apodaca served with the Taos County Sheriff’s Office for 8 years.

U.S. Marshals Survivors Benefit Fund Executive Director Carl Caulk and Board of Directors Vice Chairman Mike Prout represented the Fund at this event which included representatives from numerous Department of Justice agencies and was headlined by USMS Director Gadyaces Serralta and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. On May 11, he was killed when his patrol car was struck head-on by three individuals suspected of several shooting related crimes who were fleeing from law enforcement.

Officer Keller had served with the Greenwood Police Department for three years and was a veteran of the U. S. Army and National Guard.

He is survived by his wife and daughter.
