The Hillbrow health heritage story and its timeline seems bookended by the invisibility of slums - from the 1880s mining shanties to today's decayed highrises of hell... But what happens in-between and what endures is the story of healthcare where it's needed most in Joburg.
MUST READ | Hillbrow started out as Johannesburg’s first health hub in the late 1880s. It’s also been a suburb associated with pimps and prostitution, a middle finger to the Nationalist Party, and a key site of the HIV crisis, reports @Ufrieda.

So many layers to the histories and stories of Chinese in South Africa. These miners were 'imported' to be lowest paid labourers. Working conditions were shocking. As 'yellow peril' they were confined to compounds. These men died here or were repatriated. Not welcomed to stay.
Chinese mining boys in South Africa, 1905.
The first Chinese laborers arrived at Witwatersrand on June 19th 1904, there were almost 64000 Chinese working on the Witwatersrand gold mines near Johannesburg between 1904 and 1910.

The @SpotlightNSP#WomenInHealth series is a salute to the women who make a difference in health, especially for our most vulnerable. I wrote this profile on Prof Kathy Kahn. Her 30+ years working in rural healthcare holds insights for science, also humanity. #WomensMonth2024
#WomenInHealth | Working with women in Giyani in Limpopo sparked the flame for Professor Kathy Kahn to dedicate her research career to the rural community she says she is “bonded to”. She tells @Ufrieda why it’s been this way since she was a student.

Questions over new Limpopo health MEC, but stakeholders willing to give her a chance
The deployment of the relatively unknown Dieketseng Mashego as Limpopo’s new health MEC has raised eyebrows. @Ufrieda rounds up some responses to her appointment as she clocked up her first 30 days in office: https://t.co/WAqIfdWIew
Gauteng needs for this 7th administration to reverse the slide from weak administration, poor health service delivery and to act timeously on corruption.
Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko returns to the critical role of Gauteng's MEC for Health and Wellness at a time when the health department, based on extensive reporting by Spotlight and other publications, remains mired in a chronic cycle of administrative and service delivery dysfunction. @Ufrieda reports.

Beeld, City Press, Rapport and Daily Sun to close.
This is a really bad day for SA media, and for SA's democracy in general. The more we lose reputable news sources, the more gaps there are for the fly by night, made for advertising aggregators and fake news players to take advantage. Which can only be bad for our notion of truth.

Who SA gets as health minister matters. It's a big chunk of money to manage and protect from corruption & looting. Health is also underfunded but up against enlarging health needs. There are NHI contestations to navigate but urgency to close the gap of unequal healthcare.
JUST PUBLISHED | We will soon know who South Africa's health minister will be in the new Cabinet. @Ufrieda asked some academics and activists what qualities that person should have to tackle the key health issues the country faces.
