Since I'm an elder, I'll complicate things.
The way Kasongo is talking here is the way the media talks every morning on @SpiceFMKE and @ntvkenya. It's the way the media talked at me about CBC. They kept hounding me wirh "wapi mpango? What's the alternative?" They implicitly ridiculed everything I said was the problem with CBC, because I had "no plan", and even if I did, I had no power or resources to implement it. And meanwhile, I'm sitted next to Dr Juan, or some other KICD person, who is talking about teachers trained and textbooks bought.
The reality is that Kasongo is using a rhetoric which many Kenyans love. And Kenyans are not yet fundamentally shifting from it. We're just saying that the person contradicts the words. We don't dispute his projects. We just dispute whether they're working, and we're saying they don't because of theft and violence. But we are still accepting his thought framework.
I don't care for the man, and I especially despise this rhetoric of development. I think it represents everything wrong with Kenyan politics. Thieves, robbers and murderers can become popular in Kenya because they built a school or a toilet or a gate. And when some of us raise that question, we're told it's a concrete solution for people who have nothing. We have no right to speak because we have done nothing for "the people". And if you have a mind to ask questions, you're too knowledgeable, too vocal, to be part of "the people." To belong to "the people," you have to be poor, powerless and ignorant.
In reality, this view of "development" is mediocrity and madharau. And very colonial. The British colonial officers used the same rhetoric on us, "their" natives. They would decide if natives need a road, or need to build terraces, and when African politicians or educated Africans would raise concerns, the mzungu DO would tell them to keep of "his" Africans. Educated Africans are not "real" Africans. Africans collaborating with other Africans from a different tribal reserve, are not culturally authentic Africans. Yes. The British said that.
My definition of politics is not sweets and trinkets. It's not technical projects and balance sheets. It's about aspiration, direction and dignity. Real politics makes us share a vision together and understand where OUR WORK fits in it. The role of the leader is to provide the vision which gives us the political discipline to do the work. The farmer, the teacher, the factory worker...we all fit in the vision and see how the work we each do, that others do, contributes to the whole. And the education is to help people see that.
Instead of that, Kasongo and mainstream media feed us with this colonial rhetoric of what we will be given. If you try to talk about work, they tolerate you then ask you for a solution.
If we don't articulate a philosophy of change besides sweets and trinkets, Kenyans will easily be swayed to vote for Kasongo next year with this same rhetoric Kasongo is giving now. The political work of anyone who wants to successfully campaign against him is to undermine that rhetoric with a new political philosophy. It has to talk about dignity of work. About the humiliation we experience of working so hard and being accosted for bribes and harassed by kanjo or the police. Or not being able to feed our kids or pay for their treatment. The fear of our youth that they won't afford to start families and that their parents expect support from them.
Personally, I don't want to hear about another project or handout. I want my work and expertise to be respected and to contribute to changing my country. It annoys me that farmers and pastoralists are treated like sh*t, that hawkers are humiliated by kanjo. Our infrastructure has no space for small traders, only for malls and cars. I want to hear a politician talk about that.
But most Kenyans consider such philosophical work "irrelevant to the market." And mainstream media will keep encouraging us to think like that.

Most people are so broke that they don't know how much KSH 1 BILLION is.
Do you people know what KSH 1 BILLION is?
With 1 BILLION:
You spend 100,000 DAILY for 27 YEARS and FIVE MONTHS.
Why, then, do you accept it as normal when politicians steal 600 billion?
2024, a few hours from now, Denis Juma will be shot opposite EMCO. He will bleed out as police shoot at anyone trying to get to him. He died on the street for demanding for better, for demanding for accountability. He was buried in the cemetery that's also our rubbish dump.
Western propaganda stays silent on this:
Iran ranks #1 in Asia for organ transplants.
2nd largest producer of artificial heart valves.
Top 10 in infertility treatment & nuclear medicine.
First country to produce anti-cancer drugs.
Why the silence? No profit for them.
Sorry Mr. West โ the world of today isnโt buying your lies anymore.
Advice to those applying for MSc and PhDs at @DiscoverJKUAT and I wanna encourage you all to apply.
1. You will apply, you will get but to graduate you need your entire village and ancestors behind you for constant prayers and counseling otherwise ni sayuni; So get your kins very prepared. @_Sakko is your pharmacy still operational? โบ๏ธโบ๏ธ
2. Get yourself very comfortable pairs of sports shoes coz you will need them for endless trips between graduate school, jkuat offices and your supervisors per day will leave your joints cracking. @ChampPlug or @Tausishoeplug can help with this.
3. Be prepared to buy your own materials including reagents, test-tubes, petri-dishes from the stipend....... If you are lucky u will get a plastic cup in the lab and tap water. @lablink_ltd will help you with this.
4. Finally, be patient......if a machine/equipment you are working with breaks down; return to your side-hustle until further notice........ @JuniorAkella which machines do you repair? Iko kazi hapa.
5. Be prepared to graduate after 7+ years (not my words). Well, there are even those who are 10 years and not complaining.....so your 7 years is very generous.
6. Your postgraduate examiner was last paid supervision in 2019. So don't pressure him/her to read your work. After sending your work, give him/her 12 months to review......less than this if he/she pities you.
7. Insults and harrasment is part of supervision culture. So as a student, you be prepared in advance. We tried to change this but @DiscoverJKUAT management said "NO".
8. If the project ends before you gradaute (of course it will) that will mark the end of your graduation journey. By this time those running the project at jkuat will have made money and the goal would have been achieved ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ. No one cares about your graduation anyway. A good example is the @DiscoverJKUAT Food Fortification Project funded by @EUinKenya among others launced in 2017 and ended in 2022.
9. Stipend will be paid when the government releases university capitation even if it is on 20th. So don't fix a standing order in the bank. Be flexible to avoid taking antidepressants frequently.
10. You also need to buy and wear pampers because the toilets are all "out of order"
11. GOLDEN RULE: DO NOT RESIGN FROM YOUR CURRENT JOB. Read alongside #8.
Conclusion: Whatever you do with this advice is none of my business. We wish you goodluck.
