Calling NI Protestants “planters” is sectarian abuse. It tells an entire community they are foreign, illegitimate and collectively guilty by ancestry. This tweet is the beginning of the end for it being used on X without pushback,

Every use of this bigoted slur should be reported, logged and challenged. If platforms and politicians will not act, police reports and legal action against repeat offenders must be considered.

For 300 years, corsairs came to enslave Europeans.

Not from a colony. From Europe's own coasts.🏴‍☠️

Spain, Italy, France, even Ireland and Iceland felt their reach.

One historian's estimate puts the number enslaved above a million across the centuries.

That figure is disputed. In both directions. What is not disputed: every government paid ransom, and paid again, and the raids never stopped.

🕊️ In 1816 Britain tried one more time, through words alone. The Dey of Algiers agreed to stop. For a while, it held.

⚡ Then in May 1816, around 200 fishermen under British protection were massacred at Bona. Britain had run out of patience.

Admiral Lord Exmouth was given a fleet. And Britain did not sail alone: a Dutch squadron joined him, under Vice-Admiral van Capellen. British and Dutch, sailing as one force.

💥 August 1816. The combined fleet stood off the walls of Algiers. Exmouth sent his terms in. The Dey refused. At half past two, the guns opened fire.

For nine hours, British and Dutch guns hammered the harbour defences. The corsair fleet in harbour was destroyed at anchor. Allied casualties, British and Dutch together, passed 900 killed and wounded. It was a hard fight, not an easy one.

By morning the defences lay silent. Exmouth demanded surrender. The Dey accepted.

🔓 1,083 slaves were freed at Algiers itself. Men and women of many nations and many faiths. The Dey repaid around 80,000 pounds sterling in ransom money.

Counting earlier releases that year, around 3,000 people walked free across all of 1816. Not walking free in a single day. Freed across the whole of that year.

The treaty broke the back of a 300-year system. It did not end the raids overnight. Raiding returned in the years after, on a smaller scale. It was the French conquest of Algiers, from 1830, that finally ended it for good.

Britain and the Netherlands had broken a system three centuries old. Not for empire. For people who had no one else to answer for them.

Raphael Lemkin was the architect of the Genocide Convention. Article 2 defines genocide as acts committed with intent to destroy a group in whole or in part.

Border Protestants were killed by name, by farm, by townland for nearly thirty years. The Convention obligates every signatory to prevent and punish perpetrators.

Ireland repeatedly refused to extradite suspects to face justice and @GOVUK has standing to bring that failure to @CIJ_ICJ and @GovIE clearly has questions to answer.

So many people are appalled by the deeply insensitive decision of Sinn Fein to hold their political rally in Lisburn on the very evening of the anniversary of this terrible IRA attack that took the lives of 6 young men.

Not only on the day of the Anniversary, but just round the corner from the where the memorial and service was held to the 6 young men, murdered in one of the most terrible attacks of the troubles.

The young men were participating in the Lisburn Fun Run and half Marathon evening and while in their mini bus they were blown up in an IRA attack that shocked and appalled.

We will always remember those young men. We will never allow what happened in the past to be rewritten or forgotten.

The Covenanters were Scottish Protestants who believed Christ alone is the true head of the Church, not kings, not bishops imposed by the state. In 1638 they swore a covenant before God to defend true worship and resist imposed control.

I have been pondering on Irish history in recent days. I'm possibly going to write a few blog posts on the subject because writing about the Troubles and terrorism are insufficiently controversial and triggering. I thought I should add some fuel to the fire. 🤨

Here's an interesting little graphic from a medical study, that revealed DNA clustering within the four ancient kingdoms of Ireland.

The study also highlighted the perhaps unsurprising fact that there's a DNA connection between Ulster and southern Scotland. This of course is partly explained by the Plantation of Ulster but that's only part of the explanation. The full explanation involves geography (the close proximity) and ten thousand years of people travelling back and forth across the North Channel. The Plantation of Ulster is merely one chapter in a ten thousand year long story.

So, petty-minded bigots who talk about an "occupied six counties" or "Planters" who apparently should "go home", should perhaps check their own DNA. Their ancestral connection to Ulster, may be shorter than the person they are telling to "go home".

Modern labels involving religion or nationality, or even your surname, is no gurantee that you are more or less "Irish" than someone else on this island.

The oldest weapon ever found on Earth wasn't made in Africa.

It wasn't made in the Middle East.

It was made in Essex.

420,000 years ago. Before the pyramids. Before Stonehenge. Before any civilisation on Earth.

Someone stood on a riverbank near Clacton-on-Sea, picked up a piece of yew wood, and carved a spear point using a flint tool.

They chose yew — the strongest, most flexible wood in the forest. They scraped it smooth. Shaped it to a point.
This wasn't an accident.

This was engineering.

In 1911, a man called Samuel Hazzledine Warren dug it out of a beach. He thought it was an antler.

For decades, experts argued it couldn't be a weapon. The people who made it weren't clever enough, they said.

Then in 1995, eight complete throwing spears were found in Germany. 300,000 years old.

The debate was over.

The Clacton Spear was confirmed as the oldest worked wooden weapon ever discovered.

It sits in the Natural History Museum in London today.

They tell you British history starts with the Romans.

It doesn't.

Fishermen off the Suffolk coast say they can hear church bells ringing underwater.🇬🇧🔔🌊

They say it means a storm is coming. And that no sailor should put to sea.

Because under those waves lies one of England's greatest cities.

In the 13th century, Dunwich was the size of London. Eight churches. A mint. A harbour so powerful the King demanded forty warships from it.

An eighth of the entire English fleet. It was the sixth wealthiest city in the country.

Then in 1286, a storm surge hit like nothing before. Another in 1287. Then another. A quarter of the city vanished in a single night. Three churches swallowed whole. Four hundred houses gone.

And the sea kept coming.

By 1831, Dunwich had thirty-two voters, forty-four houses, and two Members of Parliament. Manchester had two hundred thousand people. And no MPs at all.

The last medieval church, All Saints, clung to the cliff edge for centuries. In 1919, it finally fell. Bones from its graveyard still tumble from the cliff today.

Everyone assumed it was gone.

In 2008, scientists pointed sonar at the seabed off Suffolk.

Churches. Streets. A town hall. The largest medieval underwater city in Europe. Less than a mile from shore.
Still there.
