Yesterday, during Friday prayers at the Muslim Center of New York in Queens, a man reached for his pocket and congregants saw what looked like a firearm, creating a terrifying situation for Muslim New Yorkers who had gathered to worship.
I’m immensely grateful and relieved that an MTA employee, a cab driver and an NYPD officer acted quickly to help ensure no one was hurt. Every New Yorker should be able to observe their religion without fear or intimidation.
Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war. Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace.
I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe. I have been in contact with our Police Commissioner and emergency management officials. We are taking proactive steps, including increasing coordination across agencies and enhancing patrols of sensitive locations out of an abundance of caution.
Additionally, I want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers: you are part of the fabric of this city — you are our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers, and community leaders. You will be safe here.
I attended a baby Janazah today.
There’s nothing that humbles you like standing over the grave of a baby that’s barely the size of your forearm.
In that moment, all the things you stress about suddenly feel pointless.
Indeed, to Allah we belong and indeed to Him we shall return.
My tenant has been renting from me for 5 years and she has NEVER given me a problem. Rent always on time, she keeps the house spotless, and anytime something breaks she gets it fixed and just lets me know it’s taken care of. She’s really been a blessing as a tenant. Today she called me crying, saying she’s been sick and had to go on FMLA. She doesn’t qualify for disability, so right now she has no way to pay her rent. I told her not to stress and gave her 90 days rent-free. I’d rather lose the money for a few months than lose a good, respectful tenant who has always handled her business. Sometimes it’s not about profit it’s about compassion.
We strongly condemn these dishonest and defamatory attacks on Imam Siraj Wahhaj.
Imam Siraj is a widely respected faith leader and advocate for peace and justice who has been a pillar of New York City for decades. He and the historic mosque he leads are also renowned for cleaning up neighborhoods once racked by drugs and other crime, creating a safe environment for all.
The dishonest attacks on Imam Siraj by the @newyorkpost, a racist propaganda outlet masquerading as a news outlet, is ludicrous. If Imam Siraj or anyone else had something to do with the 1993 WTC attack, they would have spent the last 30 years in a jail cell, not leading a house of worship in New York City. Unindicted co-conspirator is a label that the government has repeatedly used to smear American Muslims who have done nothing wrong (and of course, the Post and others considered the label meaningless when it was used against the President).
We call on the political, community and faith leaders of New York who have worked with Imam Siraj for decades to condemn these dangerous and defamatory attacks on him. The constant use of anti-Muslim hate in politics must end.
Labeling Muslims as “unindicted co-conspirators” is one of the most un-American things our government has ever done.
Imam Siraj Wahhaj was one of more than 170 people whose names were placed on a secret list. Not because they were charged or convicted, but because they were Muslim and outspoken at a time when fear ruled reason.
They were branded before they were even heard. Their reputations were destroyed while they still stood in line to defend the very country that turned on them.
Years later, courts ruled the practice illegal because it violated the foundation of due process - the principle which this nation was built on. But by then, the harm had already been done. Careers ended. Families suffered. Communities grew silent.
This was not justice. This was fear-mongering masqueraded as patriotism. And history will remember how America failed some of its most loyal citizens when they needed it most.
Zak's Pizza, Pasta and Wings is another heroic chapter in the story of Ḥalāl in America.
The proprietor can be, without exaggeration, described as an unsung Don of Ḥalāl in Lombard.
When my eldest child kept their first fast at the age of 5, I threw them a pizza party with all their friends and brought home an extra large pizza from Zak's.
His story starts, according to my memory, decades ago. Like many immigrants to this country that had to struggle hard to make it, often with no help or support, he found a living in an authentic Italian restaurant.
After years of working and learning the trade, he had an opportunity to run the business for himself. But he wasn't at peace serving those things that weren't up to the high standards of the sacred path; he could have just switched things out willy-nilly, but his dignity demanded more.
So he slowly worked to switch out ingredients, including those that had been made from pork, having his regular customers sample them for free, continuously giving feedback, until after months & months of fine tuning, they couldn't any longer tell the difference.
The result? Zak's Pizza Pasta and Wings is itself an authentic Italian restaurant that accepted Islām, without giving up any part of its quality, authenticity or flavor.
Far from being a cash cow, the restaurant, to this day, is staffed and run by family, including his son, Zak, pictured.
My journey with HFSAA has shown me many amazing & unbelievable stories of beauty, sincerity and sacrifice, many of which demonstrate that truth is often more wondrous than fiction. Zak's doesn't fall short.
For all the haters out there, they didn't ask me to write this, nor am I in any way being paid or compensated in this word for this review. I don't even eat this kind of food anymore, as I'm more concerned with lifting and eating protein, thus more likely to eat a dozen eggs or a tub of plain Greek yogurt with a scoop of whey protein. But the story of taking something beautiful and blessing it with perfection for God's sake, still moves me & makes otherwise thankless work worth it.
Allāh Ta'ālā bless them and everyone else who struggles to do what's right in the most beautiful way possible.
In 1987 an estimated 800,000 people flocked to the the Golden Gate Bridge for its 50th anniversary. The weight of the large crowd caused the bridge to sag 7 feet, flattening its usual convex shape. Engineer Daniel E. Mohn reaffirmed the bridge was not overstressed as a result of Bridgewalk ‘87.
