A thread 🧵
What you need to know about sexual assault.
What is sexual assault?
By definition, sexual assault maybe a sexual contact or behavior that occurs without explicit consent of the victim. This could be both in a physical and online environment. The perpetuators of this evil could be strangers, family or friends.
Key word here is victim's consent, if there is no consent, then that is assault.
Some of the forms of sexual assault are, attempted rape, rape, Fondling or unwanted sexual touching, forcing a victim to perform sexual acts, such as oral sex or penetrating the perpetrator's body, revenge porn.
How do I respond to a womxn who has been assaulted 🤔
. First of all be available, show your undivided support.
. Have a non judgemental attitude.
. Avoid pressuring them about way forward, instead guide them and let the decisions about way forward be theirs.
. Avoid victim blaming, do not ask questions that make them feel like they were to blame for the assault.
. Ask them if they need anything, a hug, water or to sit and cry. It is important for the person responding to the survivor to possess some skills in tremor response or acquire the skills so that they aren't intimidated by the situation at hand.
. Last but not least offer absolute kindness, empathy and compassion.
. Lastly let them be aware that they may report the crime to police so they can get justice.
