To U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania, William Trachman 🇺🇸🇹🇿 @usembassytz
As we approach October 29, one of the darkest days in Tanzania’s history, may I remind you of your words during your Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing on April 28, 2026. You said: “This will not be swept under the rug.” You also declared that Tanzania “must be held to account.”
We expect those words to translate into action.
Religious freedom: You described religious freedom as “nonnegotiable” and insisted that constitutional protections must have real meaning in people’s lives. You said they “have to be lived.” We expect religious freedom to be defended in practice, not merely stated in principle.
Freedom of expression and the rule of law: You linked these fundamental freedoms to Tanzania’s long-term stability and prosperity. We expect the United States to stand firmly for these principles. You committed to including the October 2025 violence in the comprehensive bilateral review of U.S.–Tanzania relations. We expect that review to address the killings, the responsibility of those involved, and the need for credible investigations and accountability.
Here in the United States, we continue following the progress of the bipartisan Reassessing the United States–Tanzania Bilateral Relationship Act (S.4577), introduced by Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Ted Cruz and advanced through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. We hope Congress will move this legislation forward and that the United States will hold those responsible for the October 29 killings accountable.
Tomorrow, Tanzanian diaspora members here in the United States will gather at the Tanzanian Embassy for a vigil honoring the many souls lost on October 29 last year. We will mourn alongside the families, remember those whose lives were taken, and continue pushing for truth and accountability.
We also hope the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania will hold a vigil or observe a moment of silence on October 29 in remembrance of the victims.
Remember those who have been forcibly disappeared. Remember families still seeking to bury their loved ones and those still desperately seeking answers about what happened to them. Their pain cannot be ignored, and their questions cannot be buried.
We must also remember Tundu Lissu, who remains imprisoned on politically motivated charges -His freedom matters.
There are still many questions- Where is Polepole? Where is Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi? What about the whereabouts of others whose fates remain unknown? As long as Lissu remains in prison, as long as the whereabouts of Polepole, Nchimbi, and many others remain unanswered, and as long as families continue to seek truth about their loved ones, we will continue demanding justice.
Whatever staged national days of prayer may take place, they will not erase the truth about the October 29 killings or cleanse the record of the human-rights violations that continue to concern Tanzanians. Prayer matters to many of us, but prayer must never become a substitute for truth, justice, and accountability.
Ambassador Trachman, we will remember your promises. We will watch what follows. As an American originally from Tanzania, I sincerely hope you will represent the United States with integrity and courage, honor your commitments, and pursue truth, accountability, and the common good-with respect for the human spirit and the dignity of every person.
May the victims of October 29 rest in power. 🕯️We shall not forget. HATUTAWASAHAU🥲We shall light candles. We shall say your names.
#FreeTunduLissu. Where is Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi? We demand truth. We demand justice. We demand accountability. 🇹🇿🕯️
Tomorrow we will hold a Candlelight Vigil in Washington, DC, outside the Tanzanian Embassy (Ubalozi wa Tanzania DC).

🚨 The Courage of Tundu Lissu Demands the Sakharov Prize
Mr. @TunduALissu has paid for Tanzania’s democratic hopes in blood and years of confinement. Shot multiple times in a 2017 assassination attempt, the CHADEMA chairman recovered abroad only to return home and resume the fight for free elections and constitutional reform. Arrested in April 2025 on treason charges arising from political remarks tied to the “No Reforms, No Election” mobilisation, he has now spent more than 500 days in custody facing a capital offence.
The High Court has ruled he has a case to answer, with judgment set for 6 November 2026. This is not the profile of a man who has abandoned principle under pressure; it is the profile of a lawyer and opposition leader who has consistently treated political speech as a right rather than a crime.
The proceedings have become a decisive test of whether Tanzania can sustain genuine multiparty competition after decades of @ccm_tanzania dominance. A functioning democracy is not measured merely by the presence of parties on a ballot, but by the ability of opposition leaders to organise, criticise power, and mobilise citizens without the perpetual risk that their words will be recast as treason.
Prosecutors argue Lissu’s statements sought to disrupt the electoral process; he and his supporters maintain they were legitimate political advocacy. Whatever the legal outcome, the case raises fundamental questions about the boundary between protecting public order and criminalising dissent. If an opposition figure of Lissu’s stature can be removed from the political arena through a capital prosecution rooted in speech and mobilisation, every journalist, activist, and ordinary citizen who challenges authority will feel the chill.
Awarding the 2026 Sakharov Prize to Tundu Lissu would affirm that the European Parliament (@EUparliament) recognises courage exercised under the real threat of death or indefinite detention. It would signal that political mobilisation for electoral reform is not treason, that the presumption of innocence and due process remain non-negotiable, and that Tanzania’s international reputation rests as much on the independence of its institutions as on the absence of open conflict.
Tundu Lissu’s unbroken insistence on peaceful contestation, despite assassination and prolonged imprisonment, embodies the freedom of thought the prize was created to honour. At a moment when the world is watching whether long-dominant systems can accommodate real opposition, the award would stand as both recognition of one man’s resilience and a clear statement that democratic dissent must never be treated as an existential threat to the state.
Tanzania’s Tundu Lissu deserves the Sakharov Prize.
Facing a possible death sentence amid concerns over the fairness of his trial, the Tanzanian opposition leader remains a courageous symbol of the fight for democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
Hear more from EPP Group MEP @ReinholdLopatka.
Today, the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Development committees and its Subcommittee on Human Rights will shortlist candidates for this year’s Sakharov Prize. Among the nominees is Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, nominated by the EPP Group.
"Tundu Lissu has been at the forefront of the struggle for electoral reform, political fairness and the restoration of democracy in Tanzania. Despite relentless persecution, he has remained steadfast in his fight. His nomination sends a powerful message of solidarity with democracy defenders around the world and reaffirms our support for their courage and determination," says @ReinholdLopatka MEP, who spearheaded his nomination.

Tanzanian billionaire Rostam Aziz's takeover of the country's top gas field is blocked by regulator
Tanzania's competition watchdog has blocked Taifa Gas, controlled by tycoon Rostam Aziz, from buying the operator of the country's biggest producing gas field.
Tanzania’s competition regulator has blocked a deal that would have given Tanzanian tycoon Rostam Aziz a large stake in the company that runs the Songo Songo gas field, which produces about half of the country’s natural gas.
The Fair Competition Commission issued a notice on Oct. 5 prohibiting the merger application filed for the transaction, Orca Energy Group Inc., the field’s Canadian-listed operator, said in a statement late on Oct. 9. The commission gave no reasons.
