Tanzania’s Tundu Lissu should win the Sakharov Prize
By nominating Tundu Lissu for the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2026, the EPP Group sends a message of support for democracy and the rule of law in Tanzania. Facing a death sentence after an unfair trial and persecution, the Tanzanian opposition leader remains a courageous symbol of the fight for democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
"Tundu Lissu has been in detention for more than 500 days because he advocates for free and fair elections and a democratic future for his country. He continues to face the death penalty. There is no doubt about the political nature of his detention. Despite persecution and repression, Tundu Lissu remains steadfast in his democratic convictions. By nominating him, the EPP Group honours this extraordinary courage. The European Union must no longer tolerate the criminalisation of legitimate opposition work or the manipulation of the judiciary in Tanzania," says @davidmcallister MEP, Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.
"The struggle of Tundu Lissu highlights the critical erosion of democratic pluralism and constitutional rights in Tanzania. This nomination reinforces the EPP Group’s solidarity with democratic defenders worldwide. We must ensure that the rule of law is used to protect political freedom, in Tanzania and throughout the world," insists @ReinholdLopatka MEP, who nominated Tundu Lissu for the Prize on behalf of the EPP Group.
"Given the strong partnership Europe has with Tanzania, we cannot and will not look away when political persecution, such as that faced by Tundu Lissu, takes place. We will highlight this unacceptable behaviour with his nomination for the Sakharov Prize," states @lukasmandl MEP, chairing the EPP Group in the Development Committee.
The Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament will choose the laureate from among three shortlisted names on 22 October.
Wow. I told Mwenyekiti how much we love him.

Let that sink in……….
WHERE IS EMMANUEL NCHIMBI?????????

Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, imprisoned and facing a possible death sentence, has been nominated for the EU’s top human rights prize.
He is on trial for treason, which he denies, since April 2025. The nomination was made by the European People’s Party.
🚨 CMAG Must Hold Tanzania government to Account:
Tanzania remains on your formal agenda for a reason. Credible investigations by @amnesty, @hrw, @UN special procedures, and independent media documented the use of unnecessary and lethal force against protesters and bystanders after the 29 October 2025 general elections.
Families still search for the missing. Some have buried clothes and photographs because they were never given a body. Morgues overflowed. Bodies vanished from hospitals. Reports of remains removed to conceal evidence have never been answered with an independent, transparent criminal investigation that identifies commanders, shooters, and those who ordered the disposal of the dead.
A government-appointed commission later acknowledged hundreds of deaths. Acknowledgement without accountability is not justice. It is a briefing note.
Hon. E.P. Chet Greene of Antigua and Barbuda (@ABMinistryFA), the Ministry of International Relations of Botswana (@MIR_BW), Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand (@AnitaAnandMP) and Global Affairs Canada (@CanadaFP), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Grenada (@MoFAGrenada), Wisma Putra of Malaysia (@MalaysiaMFA), Malta’s Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs (@MFEAMalta) and Minister Chris Fearne (@chrisfearne), Mauritius Minister Dhananjay Ritish Ramful (@RitishRamful), the Government of Samoa (@samoagovt), and the Zambia Foreign Ministry (@ZambiaMFAIC), Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey (@SGCommonwealth) and the Commonwealth Secretariat (@commonwealthsec):
Any official Tanzanian report claiming “reconciliation” and a fair process in the case of CHADEMA chairman Mr. @TunduALissu should be treated with extreme caution. Mr Lissu has been held since April 2025 on a non-bailable bogus treason charge arising from political speech about the election.
Mr. Lissu remains behind bars. The trial continues. Opposition members and young people continue to face arrest, terrorism-related accusations, and the shrinking of civic space. The media is constrained. Peaceful assembly is restricted.
Tanzanians live with the knowledge that criticism can be followed by a knock at the door. That is not a country that has returned to Commonwealth values. It is a country asking you to accept paper progress in place of lived reality.
The pattern did not begin on election day. Before the vote, former diplomat who turned the ruling party CCM critic Humphrey Polepole was abducted from his Dar es Salaam home on 6 October 2025. Blood was found at the scene. His family has pleaded for him to be returned, dead or alive. His whereabouts remain unknown.
In August 2026, Vice-President Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi resigned after less than a year in office, was expelled from CCM, and has been removed from public political life. These events sit inside a wider climate of fear: enforced disappearance, selective prosecution, and the message that no one, opposition leader, ruling-party dissident, or deputy head of state is beyond sudden erasure from public view.
We therefore call on you to refuse any presentation that sanitises this record, and to reject the participation of Professor Palamagamba Kabudi as a messenger of false reassurance. Do not allow a ministerial seat in New York to launder unresolved killings, missing bodies, a jailed opposition leader, a vanished former ambassador, and a muzzled public.
Demand the immediate, unconditional release of political prisoners including Tundu Lissu; a genuinely independent investigation into the October 2025 killings and disappearances; the return of remains to families; an end to abductions and terrorism charges against civic actors; and the restoration of media freedom and political organisation.
If these conditions are not met, CMAG must move from words to consequences. In Tanzania, the dead, the missing, and the imprisoned cannot be reduced to talking points.

When defending democracy demands everything: @TunduALissu’s extraordinary journey through political persecution, an assassination attempt, exile, imprisonment and the continuing struggle to rebuild democratic institutions and restore fundamental freedoms in Tanzania.
Thank you for continuing to speak out about Tundu Lissu’s nightmare in Tanzania. His ordeal must not be ignored, forgotten, or silenced.
Tundu Lissu deserves justice, freedom, and the full attention of the international community.
The world should continue to stand with him and with every Tanzanian demanding accountability, democracy, and human rights.
The world must not look away from what is happening in Tanzania.
Samia Suluhu is the devil in human form.
Important recognition of Tundu Lissu’s extraordinary courage.
He has survived an assassination attempt, returned home to continue the struggle for democratic reform, and now remains imprisoned on treason charges.
An inspiring nomination. #FreeTunduLissu
