Nigerians have not experienced democracy in the last 8 years.

What we have seen is constitutional dictatorship, a system where dictators hide under the legitimacy of democracy to oppress citizens.

Here are signs to know you’re not in a democracy:

1. Soldiers feel higher than civilians and oppress people for no reason. Soldiers feel like they run the country, and oppress everyone, from police to citizens.

2. Law enforcement oppress and extort citizens.

3. Protests are outlawed and people are killed for it.

4. Courts are outlawed and the govt refuses to obey court orders

5. Opposition is outlawed, and you end up killed or kidnapped if you protest against the govt.

6. Family of the dictator (first son, first daughter) become too powerful.

7. Senate is a rubber stamp, and does the bid of the executive.

8. Elections are a mere suggestion. The electoral umpire works with the tyrant to decide who wins.

For those Nigerians claiming they’re against Niger coup, I’m sorry, but you aren’t even living in a democracy. There’s no difference between Abacha and APC, in fact, people had more freedom under Abacha, than under APC.

Nigeria needs to experience democracy first, before looking for a country to export democracy to. You can’t export what you don’t have. A constitutional autocracy is worse than a military junta.
