#LiuXiaobo said he had no enemies, no hatred. Ch government made him an enemy & told people why they should hate him https://t.co/phqG5is8Rt https://t.co/jMakZHQjIi
Biden needs to tell Xi that threatening dissidents’ families back home so they don’t protest against Xi’s visit *in the US* is transnational repression, and can’t be tolerated:
Chinese University of Hong Kong--a globally top ranked university--took away two students for holding placards that ask others what they thought should be the core values of the university. How's a university "top ranked" if it doesn't allow students to...ask questions??
@DavidPepper Yes, the right-wing line that the “US is not a democracy” is absolutely not a lament, but it is absolutely a warning, threat, aspiration, and relief.
On this day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, let's remember the lawyers who are currently imprisoned. It's disheartening to know that some of them are in critical health conditions or experiencing arbitrary detention. In the newsletter, you will find the latest updates. 👇🏻
@Stephensr99 But the article shows the opposite: Biden made lots of money after leaving office. Want to see crooked? Try this: “The year he left the White House, [Biden] handed over $3.7 million in federal income tax—or about 5,000 times the $750 that President Donald Trump reportedly paid.”
@MarkSimonHK I know Judge Tang & it’s deflating to see such a judicial luminary embarrass herself so roundly. I hope she can assure my former human rights colleagues—who all had to flee Hong Kong for defending actual rights, not just the right to “delicious food”—that the CCP is good & just.
@ANNELAMOTT The problem here is trying to decode Schrödinger’s Humor: Conservatives can’t tell good jokes, so we assume Brooks is being serious. However, his claimed jocularity is so tone-deaf, myopic & mean that it checks out as standard Republican fare that makes fun of regular Americans.
"Each of us must decide what we are willing to do to accommodate Xi Jinping’s “Iron House,” just as we must decide whether we will partake of what, in 1925, Lu Xun called the “banquet of China”... where crimes against humanity is on the menu.
For 10yrs, #China has enjoyed impunity for abducting HRD #CaoShunli, blocking her from cooperating w @UNHumanRights#UPR. She was tortured - deprived of medical treatment in a severe case of state #reprisal. She died in police custody @ a heavily guarded hospital in 3/2014.
@EdKrassen@thePowerbeard The GOP this century—with its assaults on the weakest, obscene faux media industry, incessant firearm cheerleading, electoral corruption, celebration of ignorance, history denialism, and embrace of fascist rebellion—is where “both sides”-ism and “what about”-ism have gone to die.
Here is an excellent essay by @williamnee. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has been issuing damning opinions about PRC violations for many years. It really needs an effective public relations firm’s assistance in disseminating its worthy findings.
@abughazalehkat@JesseBWatters I too hadn’t realized the dad-made building magnate who blocked blacks from his apartments, took out an ad to try to execute 5 innocent black teens & targeted black poll workers for mendacious goals had morphed into a martyr-gangsta. But that Fox still gonna hunt…
@just_run08@RpsAgainstTrump@MittRomney You are correct. Trump and others in the GOP are so obscenely awful that Republicans who speak out against them are often canonized by the left. People of conscience and memory must remember not to vote a .120 hitter to the All Star Team just because they used to be batting .080
@EdKrassen He was not “likely an amazing guy.” I only say so since he was a conspiracy theorist, gun extremist (valued his guns over children’s lives) & racist xenophobe (said shooting migrants was okay). Evidence for all this came from his mouth. Let’s not publicly honor hateful idiots.
@Michael4Ranger @LizInTheB@KellyannePolls So it’s not necessary to cherry pick the Bible or interpret Scripture through the lens of your personal beliefs. The Church’s baptism rule explicitly shows it feels the unborn are not (yet) worthy of being saved, and that its total abortion opposition is a theological power play.
@Michael4Ranger @LizInTheB@KellyannePolls Here’s a Catholic Church rule: Only a being that breathes outside the womb can be baptized & live eternally. This idea underpins forced birthing, disregards maternal & fetal health & suggests even the Church doesn’t think “life begins at conception” or that a “fetus is a person.”
