Was excellent to visit Mexico City recently for multilateral consultations. New Zealand & Mexico have a long history of working together to support positive outcomes in the UN system. The panel discussion at the Instituto Matías Romero was a highlight.
The Minister has welcomed Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey on her first official visit to New Zealand today in Auckland. 🇳🇿
They discussed:
- the important role that the Commonwealth plays in bringing together countries with shared values;
- New Zealand’s support for an effective Commonwealth that focuses on its core strengths such as promoting democracy, human rights and good governance;

@NZUN
Recognizing the central role of Member States in the reform process, today the General Assembly decided to establish an informal ad hoc working group to consider the SG’s report on the Mandate Implementation Review as part of the SG’s #UN80 Initiative.
I have appointed Ambassador Carolyn Schwalger of New Zealand @CSchwalgerNZ and Ambassador Brian Wallace of Jamaica @BCMWallace_UN to co-chair the working group with the aim of concluding the work by March 2026.
I urge all Member States to engage in the working group to ensure that meaningful reforms can be made and to support constructively the work of its co-chairs.
The #UN must be led through the crisis and into the future by all of us by rebuilding trust in one another and in the institution that we established 80 years ago.
Delighted to meet Norwegian Prime Minister @jonasgahrstore of Norway at the NATO Summit.
While our nations are at different ends of the earth, our commitment to peace and security is close.
Delighted to meet with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at the NATO Summit today.
Like New Zealand, Denmark a small country with a big voice on global security and prosperity.
There can be no prosperity without security.
And while Germany and New Zealand meet here at NATO we also discussed expanding our trade and science ties - as friends and partners.

New Zealand is gravely concerned by the escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran. Any further retaliatory action significantly increases the risk of a regional war. This would have catastrophic consequences in the Middle East.
It is critical that all actors prioritise de-escalation. The best path to regional security is the ongoing talks between the United States and Iran.
We have asked officials to convey these messages urgently and directly to the Ambassadors of Israel and Iran in New Zealand.
We are very focused on the safety of New Zealand staff in Iran, and on New Zealanders in the wider region. MFAT is following the situation closely.

Indonesia is an absolute priority for the New Zealand government, which is why we have now visited here four times since re-taking office as New Zealand Foreign Minister in late 2023.
Indonesia is one of New Zealand’s oldest friends in Southeast Asia and our relationship is warm, deep, and broad-based. There is much that we admire about your country. We are ambitious for us to do much more together.

The Minister was delighted to re-connect with Retno Marsudi, who served as Indonesia’s Foreign Minister from 2014 till 2024 and most recently visited New Zealand last year. She is now the UN Special Envoy on Water.
They discussed the progress being made in NZ-Indonesia relations and the role of water in international relations.

The conduct of hostilities in places like Gaza, Sudan, Ukraine and Myanmar is killing an unprecedented number of civilians - especially aid workers and children.
At today’s #UNSC debate on protecting civilians, New Zealand reminded the Council that respect for and compliance with international law isn’t optional. It’s essential.
