I’ve heard that the concept of the “earth” as we know it now did not exist when the Genesis story was written. Instead, the promise from God refers to the land or the area in which Noah was.

If my memory serves, at least one model (EDCO perhaps also Sunweatherman) of this cataclysm show parts of the Middle East avoiding the major floods. I could be wrong. But worth looking into more.
