College athletes should be compensated for use of their names, images, and likenesses. This is a civil rights issue. #athleteinclusion
NCAA explores compensation for names, likeness https://t.co/zeBVDdSCgK,
@EddieComeaux It should not be allowed for the NCAA to profit off of athletes for their names, images, and likeness. These athletes are entitled to their own property and thus should be respected and compensated whenever their name, image, or likeness is used. #Athleteinclusion
Similar to gender equity, racial equity should be treated the same way. Student athletes deserve equal treatment and opportunity in every aspect of their collegiate sports careers. #UCR150 @Songling_GSOE
@ggarc039 @Songling_GSOE Hi Gretel, I think it could be because of the racial perspectives in the sport. I do think that it's a highly questionable practice that shows football teams have selfish desires. #UCR150 @Songling_GSOE
The NCAA exploiting their student-athletes makes me believe that it is a for-profit company rather than their self-proclaimed nonprofit status. #UCR150 @Songling_GSOE
@ArturoAldaco5 @Songling_GSOE Hey Arturo, I agree with you. I also think it's not just the act of seeking excellence but the athletes are the source of income that generates revenue for the NCAA. If the NCAA uses their athlete's images for money, the athlete should receive profit too. #UCR150 @Songling_GSOE
Medically excused incidences should be taken into considering when a student-athlete is unable to compete. This includes the desire to transfer due to certain factors hindering the student's capability to flourish in their University. #UCR150 @Songling_GSOE
Hey Arturo, I agree with you. With the recent measles outbreak, if a student-athlete catches the measles, they would not be able to compete. It is not their fault because it is an airborne disease. So I think it's cruel to take away their FinAid. #UCR150 @Songling_GSOE
According to the 4-4 Transfer rule if students are not eligible to compete, they won't qualify for Student Aid... What if a student has a serious has to be out for over 3 months. Hardly seems fair. #NCAA#UCR150#thataintright @Songling_GSOE @saragrummert
@AngelaH19667646 @Songling_GSOE Hi Angela, I definitely agree, especially since these players are the way the college teams acquire money and progress. I think schools/teams should treat college students how they want to be treated. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
There should be proper compensation to players for injuries, especially if it's out of their control. Kevin Ware was this example. He experienced an open fracture wound and his team still had to decide whether he or the team should pay for the medical bill #UCR150 @Songling_GSOE
Title IX's goal is to mitigate or prevent discrimination of women in both athletic and education areas. With institutions or schools who are not compliant, I think there should be consequences in place to take away these discriminatory views. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
@christyng22 @Songling_GSOE Hi Christy, I agree with you, although Title IX introduces gender equity, it does not mean that all institutions will meet its expectations. Chapter 4 notes that even some institutions refuse compliance with Title IX and thus denying gender equity. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
The NLI can be very manipulative in terms of what the athlete involves him or herself in. It's as if you have to read the fine text to mitigate the ambiguity of the letter which is completely unnecessary for the student-athlete. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
@_janaee_ @Songling_GSOE Hi Janae, I agree with you. The NLI is very two-faced in terms of what it's said to do on the surface level. Players do not know who or what they are signing into at this point, especially in Roquan Smith's example. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
@Alejand77947089@saragrummert I think the NCAA is too caught up with their money especially when these student athletes contribute to their financial growth. These injured student-athletes deserve compensation because they work hard to make a compromise for these universities. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
The NCAA isn't considered a monopoly for controlling 85% of the shares. To be a monopoly, the entire market would have to be controlled. There should be a fine-line to distinguish these boundaries since the NCAA clearly is a monopolist in the market. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
@Jaycee_Dallas@saragrummert Hi Jaycee,
I agree. Even though there are incentives for achieving a high GPA to get into graduate programs, for example. I don't think there are many other incentives out there in terms of what sports have to offer such as recognition and a sense of relief from teamwork. #ucr50
I find it ironic how the NCAA was established to protect student-athletes despite its criticisms in how it approaches its regulations and sanctions. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
@emilytoma003 @Songling_GSOE Hi Emily! I agree with your point, student-athletes also have to juggle school and sometimes work in their schedule in order to financially sustain themselves. I believe there should be increased awareness and compensation for these student-athletes. #ucr150 @Songling_GSOE
