In Astana, on behalf of WHO/Europe, I accepted from Viorel Gutu of FAO the role of Chair of the Regional Quadripartite mechanism for Europe and Central Asia.

The name of this mechanism may sound technical, but its mission is very important. Together, @WHO, @FAO, @WOAH and @UNEP help countries tackle health risks that sit at the intersection of people, animals, plants and the environment — the heart of the #OneHealth approach.

The need for this work is hard to ignore: 75% of new and emerging human diseases come from animals, causing 2.7 million deaths each year; over 23 million people fall ill annually from unsafe food; and extreme heat, wildfires and vector-borne diseases are adding new pressure, especially on the most vulnerable.

Resources may be tighter, but our purpose is not. Working closely with my fellow regional directors - @ViorelGutu (FAO), @BudimirPlavsic (WOAH) and @KreilhuberA (UNEP) - we will continue supporting Member States with practical tools, evidence-based policymaking, and coordinated action across sectors.
