#African Rights Commission opens proceedings on RSADO petition accusing #Eritrea of abuses against #Afar community

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (#ACHPR) has formally seized and registered a human rights complaint filed by the Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (#RSADO) against the State of Eritrea, the group said in a statement.

RSADO said the Commission confirmed its decision through official correspondence, designating the case Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization v. The State of Eritrea. The complaint, submitted on 4 June 2025, alleges widespread and systematic violations against the Indigenous Red Sea Afar people in Eritrea’s #Dankalia region.

According to RSADO, the Afar community has long faced “state-engineered” abuses, including displacement, persecution, extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and the confiscation of ancestral lands along the Red Sea coast. The group said these violations “are not historical relics” but continue under the current Eritrean authorities and ruling People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (#PFDJ).

RSADO described the Commission’s move as an “overdue acknowledgment” of the severity of the Afar people’s situation, saying domestic avenues for justice in Eritrea are nonexistent. The organization said it views the ACHPR’s decision as a critical step toward international accountability and an indication that the Afar community’s plight “will no longer be concealed or ignored.”

The group expressed appreciation to the Commission for what it called a swift and principled response and pledged full cooperation as the case proceeds to admissibility and merits stages. RSADO said it plans to submit additional evidence, documentation, and witness testimony.

The organization also urged African governments, regional bodies, international partners, and human rights defenders to increase pressure on Eritrea and take measures to prevent further abuses against the Red Sea Afar population.

“The struggle for justice continues,” RSADO said, adding that the Afar people remain determined to “live freely, safely, and with dignity in their homeland.”

As previously reported by Addis Standard in July 2025, RSADO is an Ethiopia-based political and insurgent group that says it is fighting against the Eritrean regime and has held a public conference in Semera–Logia, the capital of the Afar Regional State.

In a statement released at the end of the conference the organization, which vowed fight against the regime in Eritrea, said it will continue “its political and military struggle, with sacrifice, until its objectives are achieved.”

News: #UN welcomes release of #Eritrean detainees, urges freedom for 10,000 arbitrarily held

The United Nations human rights office has welcomed the release of 13 Eritrean nationals who were held in arbitrary detention for nearly 18 years, describing the move as “encouraging” while urging authorities to release all remaining detainees held without due process.

In a statementon 15 December 2025, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (#OHCHR) called on Eritrean authorities to “unconditionally release all individuals still arbitrarily detained,” including the G11 former senior government officials arrested in 2001 after advocating governance reforms.

OHCHR estimates that around 10,000 people remain in arbitrary detention in Eritrea, including politicians, journalists, priests, and students, and said it remains ready to engage with the government to ensure compliance with international human rights obligations.

News: #Ethiopia-based anti-#Eritrea political, insurgent group holds public meeting in #Semera, calls for self-determination of #Afar people

The Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (RSADO), an Ethiopian-based political and insurgent group opposing Eritrea’s ruling regime, held a public conference in Semera-Logia city, the capital city of Afar Region, on 13 July.

The “Red Sea Afar People’s General Conference,” organized with support from affiliated youth, women, and civic associations, concluded with RSADO renewing its commitment to what it described as a “political and military struggle” against the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) regime in Eritrea. The group vowed to continue its efforts until the Red Sea Afar people’s right to self-determination, including the option of secession, is secured.

The event took place amid heightened tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea, with RSADO warning that current escalations risk turning Afar-inhabited border areas into active conflict zones, displacing civilians and worsening an already fragile humanitarian situation.

In 2023 Addis Standard reported that the Eritrean Afar National Congress urged the Ethiopia government to support their territorial claims. The was shortly after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed floated the idea of gaining access to the Red Sea.

The role of Afar people, who straddle the borders of Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti, is since being widely discussed.
