DeSean Bishop ran for 8,347 yards at Karns High School.
That is the second most in the history of Tennessee high school football.
He got two scholarship offers.
Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State. That was the entire list.
He also scored 102 touchdowns, third most in state history. He won Mr. Football in 5A two years in a row. He ran for 3,179 yards as a junior and 2,413 as a senior.
Two offers.
He committed to Coastal Carolina in July of 2022. Then the head coach there left for Liberty, and Bishop was back to nothing.
Karns High School is in Knoxville. So is the University of Tennessee.
The Tennessee Volunteers offered him a walk-on spot. No scholarship. Pay your own way.
He took it in December of 2022.
Alex Golesh was Tennessee's offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022, the stretch when Bishop was coming through.
Bishop got hurt in camp and redshirted in 2023. In 2024 he was the backup and got 74 carries for 455 yards.
In January of 2025, Tennessee finally put him on scholarship.
That fall he started 13 games, ran for 1,076 yards and 16 touchdowns, made second team All SEC, and got nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, which goes to the best player in college football who started out as a walk-on.
Golesh had left for South Florida to be a head coach. Then on November 30, 2025, the Auburn Tigers hired him to run their program.
Which meant that on Saturday, Alex Golesh brought Auburn into Neyland Stadium.
Tennessee wore Smokey Grey throwbacks with the old leather helmet stripes to honor General Robert Neyland.
And then it almost went wrong.
Tennessee trailed 7 to 3 at halftime. They had to pull their starting quarterback, Faizon Brandon, late in the second quarter and send out George MacIntyre instead.
So they stopped being clever and just handed DeSean Bishop the football. Over and over.
34 carries. 220 yards. Touchdown runs of 25, 44 and 5.
Tennessee ran for 237 yards as a team. Bishop had 220 of them.
No Tennessee player had gone for 200 in a game since Eric Gray in 2019.
Tennessee won 24 to 14.
Afterward he did not pretend it was a normal Saturday.
"I can't lie, this game was personal for me. Golesh was a big reason I was a walk-on. I wanted them to feel what they were missing."
Monday they named him SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week. He has now scored a touchdown in seven straight games.
Tennessee is 4 and 1. Auburn is 3 and 2.
He is 21 years old. He grew up in the same city as the school that would not give him a scholarship, and he is now the best player on its team.
Second most rushing yards in the history of high school football in his own state. Two offers, neither one of them from home.
220 on Saturday.
Tom DeLonge is used to going to Petco Park and hearing his Blink 182 jam โAll the Small Thingsโ sang by the whole stadium. But last night during a playoff game, he got a bit emotional about it with tears in his eyes. He even joined the crowd towards the end and sang in the camera. Cool stuff
My least favorite part of football season is all off season people predict Tennessee to go 9-3 or 8-4 or maybe even 7-5. Then the first loss happens and everyone acts like the expectation was 15-0 lol
Tailgate from 5:00-8:30am
8:30-9:00 begin walk into stadium
9:00-10:00 get drinks/snacks and find your seat
10:00-12:00- heckle the punter/kicker and Texas warm ups
BE IN YOUR SEAT AND PREPARE ACCORDINGLY.
