IO 540 OH. Bear with me here, this explanation is a little long, but worth the read. I discovered a problem with the new cylinders after installing a couple. The fuel injector thread insert was not installed correctly. The manufacturer is replacing all 6 cylinders, good on them.
Although doing a Top OH is an option, another door has opened and I'm changing plans. A friend referred me to a full NDT lab. It's local (ish) and is qualified in each form of NDT specified by Lycoming in the OH manual. They have specific experience with Lycoming engines.
FAA classifies an aircraft piston engine overhaul as a minor repair. Technically, any AP can do it. Practically, no normally equipped AP can do it because of the specialized insp. processes and qualifications called out in the OH manual. This usually results in AP's doing IRAN (Insp. repair as necessary) maintenance to the engine. I'm no stranger to engine OH, including aircraft, Porsche and American Muscle. I also understand my limitations, that's where this specialized inspection service fits in.
The IO 540 contains no life limited parts. The path we will follow will result in an engine which has met the requirements of a Major OH. Of course, anything requiring specialized repair still gets sent out. There's no avoiding that. The end product should reflect significant savings versus the conventional SMOH route. $75K for OH of this engine is ballpark. I'm convinced that we can come in under that and have the same level of quality in the finished product.
