I have worked with marginalized communities, local actors and government institutions in Nigeria for many years. What has not changed is that communities have not just expected to be heard during the election, they want to be heard between elections.
From local governments to federal MDAs, the question should no longer be:
“Were communities consulted?”
But rather:
Were the outcomes of engagement and trust-building and life-improving events?
