The most solid research was done by psychologist John Gottman. He is famous for being able to predict, with 93.6 accuracy, which couples will divorce.
"But his most surprising finding is this: The health of a marriage depends primarily on the husband.
In his research, Gottman found that a majority of American husbands (65 percent) do not, in his words, “accept influence” from their wives. They disregard their wives’ opinions, feelings, and concerns. They ignore, criticize, and drown out their wives’ voices. They accuse them of overreacting (“You’re too sensitive”). When men behave this way, not surprisingly, their wives feel disrespected and devalued.
In fact, Gottman concludes that husbands’ disrespect for their wives is the major cause of marital instability:
“Statistically speaking, when a man is not willing to share power with his partner, there is an 81% chance that his marriage will self-destruct.” It will either break up in divorce or settle into long-term unhappiness."
Gottman’s goal is not to “scold, bash, or insult” men. It’s likely that many men resist their wives’ influence without realizing it, he says. They are following the secular script they were raised with—a narrow, one-dimensional script for the masculinity. As a result, many men are well-meaning and well-intentioned—but baffled—as their marriages fall apart.
Gottman’s aim is to help men realize how much power they actually have to make their marriage better. In his words, awareness of their impact gives men “a very powerful lever” to change course and improve their marriage.

A thread about our depraved healthcare system, and a plea.
In 2021, my friend Carole was diagnosed with terminal stage four cancer. A single parent with two kids, she had just turned 43. In 2017, she had watched her brother Chris die of the same cancer. He too was in his 40s.
Feeling like a parenting super hero when I was able to cut off a hysterical request for “the fire truck song” by correctly guessing she meant Firework by Katy Perry.
A bop for all ages apparently. Baby, you’re a fire truck.
@HDCares That is 1) a full week after the refrigerator broke, which is outside of the contractural SLAs and 2) does not count the over 10 hours I had to spend on the call to arrange this given how this was mishandled
@AMCTHD hi. I have had the worst customer service experience of my life with Home Depot. I am now on hour 72 of a broken appliance and over 8 hours of calls with the warranty team with no resolution. The support team that asked me to DM has not helped.
@HomeDepot and I are in a fight. Bought a warranty for an appliance. Appliance failed. Have now gotten the run around for 2 days instead of being able to schedule a repair. Absolutely fraudulent.
