Japan vs. the rest of the world can be summarized by airport baggage claim.

Rest of the world: Pure chaos + suboptimal Nash equilibrium. People wait directly in front of the conveyer belt, which means that nobody behind them can find or grab their luggage. People act in their own individual self-interest without any thought to anyone else. When enough people act like like this, then everyone else also has to act selfishly just to survive. Ultimately the collective is worse off, and the most selfless are the most punished.

Japan: People wait at a distance to the belt (clearly marked, though I think Japanese would do so even if it weren't), allowing everyone to find and grab their luggage with minimal hassle. Attendants nearby quickly check ID with baggage tags to confirm that nobody grabs the wrong bag, and this is done so efficiently that it doesn't add any noticeable delay.

It's common sense to anyone who's thought about this that maintaining a minimum wait distance from the conveyer belt is the optimal way to run it. Yet almost nowhere in the west have I seen this (I think I saw it once in one of the Scandinavian countries - maybe Finland - which also happens to be the European country most similar to Japan).

Imagine that it's literally someone's job to manage an airport - likely paid by your taxpayer dollars, and they haven't managed to figure out that you can make everyone better off by putting a line on the floor enforcing a minimum distance to the conveyer belt.

It's worth emphasizing that the suboptimal equilibrium rewards selfish behavior and punishes selfless behavior. If you want to be the altruistic role model that maximizes everyone's experience by waiting at a respectable distance, people will just crowd around the conveyer belt in front of you, and you'll no longer be able to find or reach your bag.

I was amongst the first to arrive at the baggage claim in SFO, waited at a distance, but of course everyone ended up crowding around the belt, making it almost impossible to see or grab a suitcase without having to tell somebody to move. Luckily I managed to find a tiny opening in the human conveyer belt centipede chain where I managed to spot my suitcase. Knowing I only had a small window of opportunity, I rushed to the belt, and in my haste to secure my bag, pushed too forcefully and nearly cracked my nail, with blood coming out underneath. Boo hoo. I still feel it in my middle finger as I type this, but it'll recover soon. At least I got my suitcase.

Baggage claim is just one example amongst countless. Escalators are the other obvious one. Japan is the only country I've been where people consistently wait on one side of the escalator to allow others to walk the other side.

Somebody tell the airport managers to put the minimum wait distance line around the baggage conveyer belts because I guess they haven't gotten the memo yet.
