My favorite lines from my favorite book of all time: War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy. I can't overstate how much this beautiful book changed my life. I've realized nothing truly matters but loving others and trying to be virtuous!
@itsnotbernhard I wouldn't say this is the ivy itself, more so selection bias for already intelligent and ambitious kids who get into ivies in the 1st place. But yes def agree that grad schools are a lot less selective and are mostly cash cows.
A lifetime ago, in my very first job, I worked as a college admissions dean for my alma mater.
We always held admitted students’ visit weekend in April, and I was blown away to learn that the admission staff could predict the “yield” from that event (the share of visitors who’d enroll) based on the forecast.
☀️ = the class might be over-enrolled
☔️ = we might be going to the wait list
They were never wrong in their weather-based predictions.
I’ve always considered this to be a fascinating indicator about the whole college application endeavor.
My favorite thing ever is when the NYT does a profile on a lib that did something bad and needs an image boost. They always have two pictures: the first has the subject in their house wearing a sweater and looking out a closed window. This creates the impression that they are hiding from a mob and just want to be left alone, and the NYT will run this pic regardless of whether the subject started the fight in the first place. The second picture has the subject walking in a park or a garden looking pensive, as if to suggest that they will bravely push through their fear and ultimately triumph over the bad guys.
