The noble sport of launching. As many launches as possible onto the Thames in London. Our mission is turn the Tideway into the sea. Making wash and proud
By public vote, Saturday on the Tideway is now called Washday. This honour reflects the dedication of our launch drivers to churning up big waves. It’s also a tribute to a club founder Edwin Walker who made the first wash creating launch, formerly known as a skip #rowing#london
In view of the success of Tideway launches on two consecutive Saturday mornings - turning the Tideway Thames into a sea - there is a suggestion that the name of that day should be changed. Please vote if you agree.
We are offering the honour of free TLC membership to Tideway clubs with fleets of launches. To qualify they should follow as few rowing craft as possible and leave behind water comparable to the English channel. We have several clubs in mind. Any suggestions? #rowing#wash
TLC members are warned an attempt is underway to introduce rowing craft that can cope with launch wash. To kill this idea at the bud members are asked to urgently increase wash by 1. overloading launches 2. setting launch trim tail heavy #rowing#tideway https://t.co/EKOYVBU3tW
So the principles of the newly launched (!) Tideway Launches Club (TLC) 1. More launches on the Thames 2. More and bigger wash 3. No need to follow any rowing craft 4. Launching is sport in its own right. Let’s build it! Go TLC! Fly the TLC flag! #tideway#thames#wash#rowing
In view of the success of Tideway launch drivers we are setting up a new club - The Tideway Launches Club. This will allow scores of launches to boat every day but without any need at all to follow any rowing crews. And here is the club logo. Go TLC!! #launch#tideway
Here is the result of a brief launch census conducted for 15 minutes today on the London Tideway. 18 launches passed the counting point. Brilliant work launchers! Even eight oared boars were bouncing. #launches#rowing#london#wash#thames
Here is the new Tideway Scale (ranking water conditions): Force 1. Wasted (no wash) 2. Bubbly (launches out hooray) 3. Bouncy (scullers annoyed) 4. Messy (fleets of launches, good work coaches) 5. Mayhem (scullers capsizing) 6. Perfect (not rowable) #tideway#rowing#beaufort
In 1805 the Beaufort Scale gave a measure of expected impacts of wind speed. We now need a scale for launch wash. Today may have been a force six on the Tideway. (Small boat capsize possible). But what should the scale be called, and what force definitions?#rowing#tideway#wash
Spectacular work today coaches! No wind and the Tideway was the sea . Btw hearing rumours that the few small boats left have invented a new exercise called the “Poseidon” as in how many times a capsize is dodged after a wave hits. It won’t make any difference! #tideway#rowing
Delighted to have received this press statement from Old Father Thames: “I have decided to hang up my oar and will now be using a launch. The modern Thames is best suited to launches due to the vast numbers of them. I was also getting seasick in my boat.” #tideway#rowing#wash
More from the Wavies Awards recognising the most washy rowing club on the Tideway! A semi final is due between @SportStPauls and @LatymerRowing - how about a wash up between clubs downstream of Hammersmith Bridge with winners in the final? Nominations!! #wash#tideway#rowing
Look at this. Where are launches?! It’s a complete waste of a river. If it’s the Tideway the launchers have failed in their duty. Get those engines running! The sport of launching demands it. #rowing#wash#tideway
Fantastic work rowing coaches of the Tideway. A depressingly calm river was turned into the north sea in just 15 minutes thanks to your arrival! Launchers are back!! Scullers beware!! #rowing#tideway#wash
But it’s nowhere near as rough as the Tideway in London. Wait for the start of season - a real sea state beckons on the Thames once those massed coaching launches arrive! #rowing#sculling#tideway#wash
It’s official. The sea by Isles of Scilly is calmer than the Tideway after the best coaching launches do their wash duties. So grumbling Tideway scullers - how about moving here? #wash#tideway#rowing#scillies
It’s official. The sea off Cornwall is calmer than the Tideway when the coaches launches are massed. Any grumbling scullers left on the Tideway?! Here’s the solution. Move to Cornwall! #wash#tideway#cornwall#rowing
The waves from the east. Are they the best now Hammersmith bridge is open? Which Putney clubs would you nominate for a wash off in the “Wavies” awards for best launch wash? The winner then gets to finals vs @StPaulsSchool and @LatymerRowing Nominate now! #wash#Rowing#tideway
