The gases emitted by forest fires can react with sunlight to form ground-level ozone.
Here in Brazil, the El Niño phenomenon makes this problem even worse: it causes more intense droughts in several regions (especially in the Amazon and the Center-West), which dramatically increases the occurrence of forest fires. With more smoke and gases, tropospheric ozone spreads far from the flames, worsening air quality and affecting the population’s health even in distant areas — exactly as the NASA study shows in the USA.

According to a new NASA study, wildfires have worsened ground-level ozone pollution across much of the U.S. since 2015. NASA’s satellite data and models help track air quality patterns across states and fire seasons.
A large Saharan dust plume has stretched across the Atlantic from the west coast of Africa towards the Americas. CAMS data shows that large parts of the Caribbean are most impacted.

🌪 O que é uma supercélula?
Uma supercélula é o tipo mais organizado e perigoso de tempestade cumulonimbus. Caracteriza-se por uma corrente ascendente rotativa persistente (o mesociclone), que pode durar horas. Elas se formam em ambientes com forte cisalhamento do vento, ar quente e úmido na superfície e ar frio em altitude.
No dia 22 de maio de 2026, uma supercélula se formou sobre São Luís (MA) e gerou um princípio de tornado (funnel cloud) nos bairros São Cristóvão e Tirirical. Ventos intensos arrancaram telhados, derrubaram árvores e danificaram fachadas de comércios. Felizmente, não houve feridos graves.
O fenômeno durou cerca de 5 minutos e foi seguido de forte chuva. Eventos como esse mostram a força da atmosfera e a importância do monitoramento em tempo real. Fiquem atentos aos alertas da Defesa Civil!

El Niño 2026 se acerca con fuerza! Según la NOAA y la OMM (mayo 2026), hay 82% de probabilidad de que El Niño se active entre mayo-julio y 96% de que persista todo el invierno 2026-2027. Podría ser un Súper El Niño, elevando temperaturas mundiales y multiplicando desastres: olas de calor, inundaciones, sequías e incendios. Los mapas muestran claramente cómo, incluso en episodios débiles o moderados, genera anomalías térmicas extremas (rojo = mucho más caliente). En EE.UU. y regiones similares a nivel mundial, esto significa cosechas afectadas, incendios forestales y eventos extremos.
En América Latina: sequías en Centroamérica y lluvias torrenciales en el Cono Sur. El cambio climático + El Niño = mayor riesgo para todos. La preparación salva vidas y economías.
