She was the twentieth child of twenty, born into a country that had counted people like her as less than fully human not even a century earlier....

Fannie Lou Hamer came into the world in Montgomery County, Mississippi, in 1917—the granddaughter of enslaved people, the daughter of sharecroppers, and poor in a way that wasn’t just about money. It was the kind of poverty that offered no softness: twenty people packed into one shack, children sent to the fields before they’d really learned what childhood was, a life measured in cotton bales and survival.

She started picking cotton at six. By thirteen, she’d left school to work full time—her education taken not by a single villain, but by a system that valued her labor more than her mind. She could read some. She could sign her name. She knew the Bible because her mother taught her that the words inside it belonged to her, regardless of what the world insisted. That one idea—that something sacred could be hers—stayed planted in her for years.

In 1944, she married Perry Hamer and lived the life Mississippi expected of her: plantation work, long days, no room for dreams. And then her body was stolen too. During surgery for a tumor, a white doctor removed her uterus without her consent—an abuse so common for Black women in the South it had a bitter nickname: the “Mississippi appendectomy.” She would never have children of her own. Instead, she raised other people’s children and poured into them the fierce love and stubborn hope she’d been denied.

By the time she was forty-four, she’d spent nearly her whole life in the fields, exactly the kind of person the world trained itself not to see. Then James Bevel, a preacher tied to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, came to town talking about voting—about rights that had always existed on paper and been stolen in practice. He said the Constitution gave her the right to register. He said they’d been lied to for a hundred years.

So on August 31, 1962, she walked into the Indianola courthouse with eighteen other Black citizens and tried to claim what was supposed to be theirs. They were turned away. Given a “literacy test” designed to fail them—questions white registrars didn’t have to answer themselves. She failed. She went back. She failed again. She kept going.

When the plantation owner found out, he called her out and told her if she wanted to register to vote, she could do it somewhere else. After eighteen years on that land, she was evicted—home gone, job gone, future suddenly unsure. She left with almost nothing, held up by a husband who refused to abandon her, and a kind of resolve that couldn’t be negotiated away.

She kept showing up anyway. And she sang.

She’d always sung—spirituals and hymns, songs passed down through cotton rows, songs that carried grief and coded hope. Now she sang freedom songs in church basements and crowded meeting rooms. Her voice wasn’t polished, but it was powerful. When she started, people stopped and listened.

In 1964, she helped create the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party to challenge the all-white delegation Mississippi had sent to the Democratic National Convention year after year. She traveled to Atlantic City to demand that her party be seated. She was not supposed to be there—a sharecropper, a woman, a Mississippian from the “wrong” side of power. But she came anyway.

And she refused to be quiet.

Before the Credentials Committee, she told the truth in a way that left no room to look away: the courthouse, the eviction, the terror. She described being arrested in Winona, Mississippi, for trying to integrate a bus station—how she was beaten so badly the blood vessels in her eyes burst, how police forced Black prisoners to beat her while she screamed. She spoke of people shot, fired, driven from their homes for attempting to register to vote.
