Who doesn’t like it when the sun shines? It amplifies colours and lifts our moods. Now I get a bit more joy when it comes out.
Below is how much I spent on electricity, for the week this time last year (£19.26) and how much I spent on for the same week this year (£4.95) and how much I got paid to export electricity (£18.38).
This includes a week’s worth of running all electrical appliances in my home from the washing machine to the ovens to charging my car. Filling my car with petrol used to cost me £60+.
So I actually got paid £13.43 to use all the electricity I needed and fill up my car.
This is because I've had solar panels, a battery installed and bought an EV. Therefore the sun gives me free electricity.
No more standing at petrol stations to pump fuel and pay the price the international markets dictate. I will top up my car when the sun shines at home (or at off peak rates for a tenth of the price of petrol).
If you are in a position to get solar panels, a battery and an EV, seriously look into it. The technology is amazing and it’s only going to get better. I monitor everything on an app and am genuinely interested in what I use, generate and how much it costs. It’s an education.

The more electric vehicles (EVs) there are in an area, the cleaner the air.

@danparry03@AndyatAuto The majority of EVs are charged overnight when the grid has an abundance of renewable energy, hence low overnight prices being offered by Octopus, Eon etc. Superchargers are charging from battery storage.
🚗 The latest stats from Zapmap are here:
⚡ There are now 119,080 EV chargers in the UK, across 46,107 on-street, destination and en-route locations
⚡ 3,028 new EV chargers were installed in the first quarter of 2026

@alwayslookup99 @duncsand Nope!
The grid has an abundance of renewable energy overnight. Octopus use EVs to balance the grid through the night. There are no subisides.
