🚨 This Amazon Fungus Can Break Down One of the Toughest Plastics
Deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon, Yale researchers discovered a fungus called Pestalotiopsis microspora with a remarkable ability: it can break down polyurethane, a difficult-to-decompose plastic.
Even more surprising, two strains were able to use polyurethane as their main carbon source without oxygen—similar to conditions found deep inside landfills.
Could nature already hold a solution to our plastic crisis?
The discovery is promising, but it is not yet a large-scale solution. Much more research is needed before this fungus could be used to clean up plastic waste.

Scientists are using extracts from sheep's wool to regenerate bone tissue in living animals.
Researchers at King’s College London have unlocked a highly sustainable breakthrough in regenerative medicine by turning ordinary sheep’s wool into advanced bone-healing scaffolds.
The team extracted keratin, the tough structural protein that gives wool its strength, and developed it into thin, biomimetic membranes. In laboratory trials, these membranes successfully supported the growth of human bone cells. When tested in living animal models with severe, non-healing skull injuries, the wool-derived scaffolds guided the growth of new bone directly across the damaged areas, demonstrating the immense clinical potential of this abundant agricultural byproduct.
What makes this discovery particularly remarkable is the quality of the regenerated tissue. While collagen has long been the gold-standard scaffold in orthopedics, it often suffers from poor structural strength and rapid degradation.
The new wool-based keratin scaffolds, however, produced bone that was far more organized, stable, and structurally similar to healthy natural bone than tissue grown with conventional collagen. Because wool is a renewable resource often discarded as farming waste, this technology offers a scalable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective alternative that could soon challenge the long-standing medical reliance on expensive, animal-derived collagen.

Does anyone remember this amazing story? On July 2, 1982, a truck driver from California flew 16,000 feet into the sky in a lawn chair. Larry Walters, 33, from San Pedro, had dreamed of flying his whole life. He bought 42 eight-foot helium weather balloons, tied them to a regular Sears lawn chair, strapped on a parachute, packed a BB gun to pop balloons to descend, a CB radio, sandwiches, and a six-pack of beer.
He expected to float a few hundred feet above his backyard. He cut the rope and shot up like a rocket — to 16,000 feet. He drifted directly into the main approach path for LAX. Two airline pilots radioed the tower: they had just passed a man in a lawn chair holding a gun at 16,000 feet. For 45 minutes, he floated over Los Angeles, freezing cold, too scared to shoot balloons because he might fall. Finally, he started popping balloons one by one and slowly descended.
He landed tangled in power lines in Long Beach, California, causing a blackout. When police arrested him, they asked why he did it. He said, "A man can't just sit around." The FAA fined him $4,000. He became a national folk hero — Lawnchair Larry — and inspired the movie Up.
