The Amos review has landed.
>Another heavyweight report.
>Another catalogue of heartbreaking stories.
>Another long list of recommendations, and…
>Another uncomfortable question…
… what have we learned that we didn't already know? https://t.co/tVQfQ1CVO4
The Ockenden report is not asking the NHS to learn new lessons. It is asking the NHS to stop forgetting the lessons it already knows. https://t.co/7JtIaJattr

Last night’s debate on Lyla’s Law was deeply emotive and, at times, incredibly hard to listen to. Those who spoke shared real, harrowing experiences from families across the UK, families who were dismissed, unheard, and left fighting for answers until their loved ones were finally diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at a critical, sometimes tragic, point.
Three precious lives lost to misdiagnosis were named, Eli, Peter, and our Lyla. Their stories, and the stories of so many others, filled that room with a powerful truth that can no longer be ignored.
The Minister’s response recognised the urgent need for change: better digital flags in primary care, greater awareness, stronger NICE guidelines, and improved training. I’m honoured to be working alongside the DSN Forum, DigiBete, Beth Baldwin and Levi Pearce to help shape some of this training so no family has to walk this path again.
Thank you, each and every one of you, who voted, who wrote to your MPs, who showed up to protest, who stood with us. I’m so sorry I didn’t get to speak to everyone last night, but please know this:
My wife, Lyla, and I are so incredibly proud of all of you.
Thank you for standing with us.
Thank you for fighting for change.
Thank you for helping make sure every family is heard.

“The findings of the report are so damning, it can come as no surprise that the CEO of the NMC resigned this week.”
I’ll be writing to the board as well @CareQualityComm about the appointment of Jackie Smith as Chair of @royalhospital@tobyperkinsmp

Absolutely essential now that this happens. Nowhere near enough progress is being made in improving #maternitysafety#safematernitycare which may explain why there are well over 100,000 signatures supporting this. I’ve signed! Pls read & do the same ! Thank you
🎉 It’s here – #ICONweek2025 has officially begun!
All babies cry, and it can feel really tough at times – but remember: you can cope. 👶
Crying often increases around 2 weeks and peaks at 6–8 weeks. This phase will pass, and you are not alone. ❤️

Having been in the same position, I support families in Leeds in calling for a more in-depth inquiry there & understand why inclusion in the rapid review isn’t enough.

Thank you so much for your work on getting the debate to parliament, Michelle.
We look forward to working with you to debate the crisis in maternity care in the main chamber.
#BabyLoss#PregnancyLoss
Waking up to more devastating news about maternity safety that is hard to comprehend - so many of the areas highlighted in today’s @CareQualityComm report into maternity service at Leeds are the same themes as we’ve heard time & time again - serious risks to women & babies, adequate investigations & harm not being learned from.
There must be a local Ockenden/Kirkup style inquiry at Leeds & women & families & staff in the wider NHS need to know why the same issues keep being repeated time and time again across to country - so we can understand the reasons and do something different.
@wesstreeting must commission a national inquiry - but the model chosen must enable learning & change to run side by side.
#maternitysafety
I’d welcome a national inquiry into maternity safety. Too many families endure preventable loss, inconsistent care, and repeated systemic failures. Furthermore, too many experience significant further harm from how healthcare organisations and the wider system respond after tragedy.
We need answers, accountability, and transformative change. We need to understand why past inquiries and recommendations haven’t translated into the change needed, so that we can be sure future recommendations and new initiatives do.
However, a legal, statutory inquiry—slow, legalistic, and often ineffective—is not the answer. It would risk fostering fear, deepening distrust and detracting from much needed and urgent change.
Better models for independent investigation exist that I believe could deliver learning, accountability, restoration, and change more effectively and swiftly.
I’ve shared my views with @wesstreeting
